My picks for entertainment ~ suggested movies, TV shows, music, and books ~ so you can enjoy some quality ME time! (ATTN Korean drama addicts! This blog has lots of K-drama love.)
Peter Sellers was the perfect person to play the clumsy French detective Jacques Clouseau. His job is to prevent a notorious thief from stealing a world famous jewel known as "The Pink Panther" which belongs to a princess.
I like the original music from the original Pink Panther movie. Henry Mancini won an award for it and he said he can't believe he received an award for making up such fun music.
They remade the Pink Panther movie in 2006 ("The Pink Panther 2") and it starred Beyoncé and Steve Martin as Inspector Clouseau. Beyoncé also contributed to the soundtrack. I didn't care too much for the remake or the music from the remake. Even though I enjoy the comedic genius of Steve Martin, he could not top Peter Sellers. I'm sure even Mr. Martin would agree with me.
Nope! My mind was not changed, The original movie released in the 1960s and the soundtrack to the movie are both vintage classic memorable entertainment!
I would not recommend the 2006 remake; however I would recommend: "The Return of the Pink Panther" (1975); "The Pink Panther Strikes Again" (1976); or any of the many other sequels to the original Pink Panther movie which starred Peter Sellers. I would also recommend the hilarious animated TV series "The Pink Panther Show" (1969).
I recently read an article about female philosophers who were contemporaries with the male philosophers in the ancient world like Aristotle, Epicurius, Socrates, etc. ("Wise Women: 6 Ancient Female Philosophers You Should Know About") I did know one of the women philosophers named in the article: Hypatia. I knew of her because I saw a movie about her. Rachel Weisz played the part.
I love Rachel Weisz. She is a fantastic actress. But I did not like this movie. Of course, Ms. Weisz did a fantastic of playing the role of Hypatia. What I did not like about the movie was that it was the story of a real life human being and her ending in the movie was horrific! What was worse? When I did more research on the real woman, it turns out the movie did not really show what happened to this woman. The Hollywood version of her death was horrible. But what they did to her in real life was much much worse. Why did she have to die that way when she had really done nothing worthy of death? I don't want to explain it. It's too graphic. I give this movie a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars.
On June 7, 2015, acting legend Christopher Lee bid us farewell. He departed this life. Henceforth, he will be spoken of as the late great Christopher Lee.
A polished actor, a distinguished gentleman, and a man with an immediately recognizable voice. You didn't even need to to see his face, When you heard that voice, you knew it was Sir Christopher Lee.
It is said that he was an Intelligence Officer in the British Royal Air Force. But it's hard to find information about what he did because apparently, even though he's dead, his work for God and country is still “a secret”.
People from my generation might remember him as Count Dracula. People from the younger generation might remember him as Saruman, the wicked wizard in “The Lord of the Rings”. Either or, he was a very memorable guy.
• He holds the world record for oldest video game voice actor. (SOURCE)
He entered the film industry in 1947 and his acting career spanned several decades. At his death, he was preparing to start his latest film 'The 11th' about the lead-up to the 9/11 terrorist attacks on America.
“The
Twilight Zone” was a popular TV series that aired from 1959 to
1964. It was hosted/narrated by its creator Rod Serling. The man
was a genius!! Sadly, he lived a very short life: 50 years. Rodman
Edward Serling (1924 – 1975). Even though this TV program only
lasted for 5 years, it left an indelible mark in the history of science fiction entertainment.
Anybody
who has watched this classic TV series probably has one particular
episode they remember. Some people say that the most popular episode
was the one titled “To Serve Man”. I don't know if it was
popular because of the content OR because of that creepy looking guy
with the funny-shaped head.
— Author🦑John DeLaughter🦑 (@HPL_JDeLaughter) March 10, 2022
But
to me the most memorable episode was “The Rip Van Winkle Caper”. The moral
of the story was twofold:
(1)
One can plan for the future but one can not predict the future; and
(2)
Avarice and greed are probably timeless human characteristics.
Here's
the plot. These guys get together to steal gold. One of the guys is
a scientist. He tells his friends that they can steal the gold, and
evade the law enforcement authorities by getting into this time
capsule. They will go to sleep for several years, like Rip Van
Winkle, and when they wake up in the future, they won't have to worry
about going to jail for committing the crime. They reason that, in
the future, law enforcement won't be looking for them because it will
be assumed that they died many years ago. When they arrive in the
future, they reason that they are now free from being fugitives from
justice, and THEY'RE RICH! They can go to the secret place where
they hid the gold, divide up the gold amongst themselves, and start
living the good life! Right?
Uuuummm ... not
quite. Because even in the future, there is no honor among thieves.
They are still avaricious and greedy. They try to kill each other,
and only one of them survives the double-crossing and the betrayal.
That one who survived found himself with a lot of gold and in a hot
desert. No humans around for miles. And also … no water. By the
time he does see human beings, he tries to get help for himself,
offering to pay them in gold, however … he drops dead! The humans
who had stopped for him were confused by my his words and behavior.
April 21, 1961: Twilight Zone's "The Rip Van Winkle Caper" airs. You steal a shipment of gold, but how do you spend it? Hey, it's the fifth dimension: Hibernate for 100 years. Sounds like a fool-proof plan, right?
The
humans remark to themselves: “He seemed to think that gold was
valuable.”
It
turns out that in the future, gold was worthless!! Humanity had
changed to the point where there was no need for gold. That was a
fact that the thieves had not even considered.
This
episode aired in April 1961. Out of all of the Twilight Zone
episodes I watched, that one made an impression on me and the life
lessons learned have stayed with me to this day.
This blog post is about one of my favorite Indian actors, Aamir Khan. It's
fair to say that he is one of the first Indian actors I came to know
who made me want to watch more Indian and Hindi cinema, even though
they have to be English subtitled. His full name is Mohammed Aamir
Hussain Khan. He started his career as a child actor.
“In
2001, he founded Aamir Khan Productions, whose first release, Lagaan,
was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film
and earned him a National Film Award for Best Popular Film and two
more Filmfare Awards (Best Actor and Best Film).” (Quote Source:
Wikipedia)
My first favorite AK film? Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001) –
As far as the story line goes: There are people living in this small
Indian village being oppressed by the British rulers. One of the men
in the village is Bhuvan (plyed by Aamir Khan). He challenges this
arrogant British guy, Captain Andrew Russell (played by Paul
Blackthorne) to a game of cricket. If he wins, the Brits can't
collect any taxes. Well the Captain is so certain that he will win,
he agrees. The villagers are wondering if Bhuvan has LOST HIS MIND!
He doesn't know how to play cricket!! The captain's sister,
Elizabeth Russell (played by Rachel Shelley) knows her brother is a
proud, crude and cruel jerk! She also knows the villagers don't know
the rules of the game. So she secretly teaches Bhuvan and the
villagers how to play the game so that at least they have a chance of
winning. I am not really familiar with any of Aamir Khan's work
before this film was released. I liked the movie for its historical
value; but also because it was the film that introduced me to this
cultured and refined actor. He really left a lasting impression. By
the way, the word “Lagaan” means “tax”. This movie has won
several awards. It was even nominated for an Oscar in the category
of Best Foreign Language Film.
My second favorite AK film? Fanaa (2006) – A painfully beautiful
love story; emphasis on the pain part. A young man, Rehan Qadri
(played by Aamir Khan) meets a blind girl, Zooni Ali Beg (played by
Kajol). He falls in love and pays for her to have eye surgery to
regain her vision. The surgery is successful ONLY … she does not
know who paid for the operation and she never knew what Rehan looked
like. When they meet again, she falls in love with him not realizing
that he was the one helped her regain her eyesight. They get married
and have a son. The problem is that she does not know her husband is
linked to a terrorist organization. When she finally realizes it she
is faced with a major decision. Should she report her husband, the
father of her child, to the law enforcement authorities so they can
capture him? The story was so tragic yet so touching and beautiful.
I was extremely moved by the performances of both Aamir Khan, and his
leading lady, Kajol.
I watched
“Live Up to Your Name”, a series is on Netflix, but it is NOT
a Netflix Original. So you might be able to find it at other
streaming sites.
Medical
dramas seems to be gaining popularity. Time-travel dramas have
already become popular. Romantic comedy has always been popular.
This TV series is a romantic comedy time-travel medical drama. It's
clear that the purpose is to show both Eastern and Western medical
practices are good, but combining techniques used in Eastern and
Western medicine could be even better. Well! That's my takeaway.
Although … I'm still scared of needles. So if someone were to
perform acupuncture on me, I would have to be totally passed out or
in such a state where my body was paralyzed and I couldn't move.
There's no way I would see a needle coming towards me and stay still.
To this day, when I have to get shots, I always close my eyes.
OK.
Back to the show! The two main characters are Heo Im (played by Kim
Nam-Gil) and Choi Yeon-Kyung (played by Kim A-Joong). Even though
this series is historical fiction, Heo Im is a real life historical
figure. Heo Im is an acupuncturist from Joseon who fell off of a
bridge into the water, and when he comes up from the water to
breathe, he finds himself in modern day Seoul, South Korea. The
first person he crosses paths with is a female doctor who is a
skilled surgeon and her speciality is heart surgery. Both medical
practictioners are “the best” in their fields. Although when
they first meet, Choi Yeon-Kyung thinks Heo Im is a crazy quack
pretending to be a doctor of oriental medicine, and Heo Im is shocked
to learn that females can actually become doctors.
What
makes this series different from other shows that I have watched is
that they cross the time barriers several times. First, Heo Im comes
to the modern-day Republic of Korea. Then Heo Im and Choi
Yeon-Kyung pass through the time portal and they both end up in
Joseon. Then they pass through again and end back up in Seoul. This
happens a number of times.
During
the course of their time-travel adventures together, they fall in
love. However, because they are from different time periods, the
questions that must be answered are:
~
Are these lovers destined to be together OR must they choose to live
separate lives because they are from different time periods?
~
If they choose to be together, will they live in Joseon, 400 years in
the past OR in modern-day Seoul South Korea?
The
main characters and the supporting cast worked well together and
created a very believable unbelievable story.
Additionally,
I learned an interesting tidbit about the history of Korea. Usually
when I watch historical period dramas, I latch on to an interesting
person or place and do a little research to find out more. “More”
meaning “did this person really exist” or “is this place for
real”? In a few of the episodes, a character was introduced name
Sayaka.
For
contrast: nobody disputed that Heo Im is a real historical figure.
However, regard the man named Sayaka, some say that there is no
historical proof that such a man ever existed. There is a story or
maybe you would call it a “legend” or “tradition” or “myth”
that during the Japanese invasions of Joseon that occurred from 1592
to 1598, there was a Japanese general named Sayaka who defected and
served in the Joseon army. It is said that he helped defeat the
Japanese forces and was given the name Kim Chung-seon. He continued
his miltary service and even fought against the Qing troops during
the Manchu invasion of Korea.
One
of the reasons given as to why there is a dispute over the existence
of this general because they claim there is no name for such a
commander in the Japanese historical materials.
To
me, there is an easy explanation for that. The Japanese got pissed,
considered him a traitor, and erased him from their records. Please!
Erasing records happens a lot in various countries. There is no
record in Egyptian history that a Jewish man named Joseph served as
second in command to Pharoah either! Just sayin'.
As
far as Korean historical records, if I were a Korean historian, and I
was going to create a hero of the people who fought against foreign
invaders, why would I make up a story about the country's military
victories and give the credit to one of the foreigners who betrayed
his own countrymen and helped us defeat the enemy invaders? If I
were going to create mythical hero, I wouldn't write the “history”
that way. I'm just thinking, this dude must be real! Why make that
story up? That's all I'm sayin'.
Anyway!
I give Live Up to Your Name (2017), 5 out of 5 stars.
Star
1: All the characters played their parts well.
Star
2: Heo Im (played by Kim Nam-Gil) and Choi Yeon-Kyung (played by Kim
A-Joong) made a perfect couple.
Star
3: The scenery in both Joseon and Seoul was beautiful.
Star
4: Watching acupuncture being performed was very educational.
Star
5: If that guy named Sayaka was not real, you sure wanted him to be!
Here
are a couple of related links to reviews by others of this TV series:
The Oscars: The 94th Academy Awards Award ceremony.
Ooh la la! (Yawn.)
I stopped watching entertainment awards programs years ago. Mainly, because most of the movies being made were, in my humble opinion, not Oscar-worthy AND also because the program to present the awards had become BORING!
So even though I knew when the 94th Oscars awards program was going to be aired, I intentionally found something else better to do. I wake up the next day and social media is ON FIRE!! Evidently, Will Smith SLAPPED Chris Rock. For the record, I have never really liked either of them as entertainers. I never liked Chris Rock's as a comedian AND never liked Will Smith as an actor. Regardless of my personal opinion, I knew the rest of the world thought they were two really great guys! So to see one of them square off with the other one and it's not “scripted”, but a genuine moment of intense anger on a program like the Oscars … I didn't know what to think!
But now that I have had a chance to think about it:
* Yes. Chris Rock's comedy was tasteless. But his comedy has never really been tasteful.
* Yes. I know Will Smith's wife Jada is growing though a health crisis and it is hurting her, which means, if you are her husband and you love your wife, you're hurting too.
Sometimes … comedians are insulting, heartless, callous, and inconsiderate. They say things and give no thought to how offensive their words might be. I have always said when it comes to comedy, there are “lines” that you should not cross over. Everything in life can NOT be turned into a joke or comedy material because EVERYTHING IS NOT FUNNY!!! Comedians should KNOW where to draw the line. But evidently, these days, comedians say anything to get a laugh and don't care who they offend!
Personally, I think that's WRONG!
On the other hand, what Will Smith did … SHOULD NOT BE TOLERATED. Yeah yeah yeah … his excuse or reasoning or justification for what he did is … LOVE MAKES PEOPLE DO CRAZY THINGS. Oh oh oh … the things we do for love and all that jazz.
This night was not a “Will Smith ONLY Night”. This night was a night that was supposed to be the high point in the careers of many people in the entertainment industry and all everybody was talking about was … Will Smith SLAPPED Chris Rock.
Then they awarded Will Smith an Oscar.
THE AWARD SHOULD BE TAKEN AWAY!!
There is no debating this, Personally, I didn't think Chris Rock's joke was really all that offensive. But I think Will Smith's reaction and what he did … OFFENDED EVERY INDIVIDUAL WHO WAS NOMINATED AND/OR WHO RECEIVED AN ACADEMY AWARD THAT NIGHT.
Did Will Smith think he looked like a knight in shining honor rescuing his damsel in distress?
WELL HE DIDN'T!!
His behavior was SHAMEFUL … and he brought SHAME to a prestigious awards ceremony honoring the hard work of many many people, who struggled to get to this one memorable moment in time in their career … which will likely not be remembered because that is the precise moment that Will Smith CHOSE TO ACT A FOOL!!!
Does he think that he or his spouse are the only people who have ever been offended by a joke?
Chris Rock may have offended Will Smith and his wife.
BUT WILL SMITH HAS OFFENDED THE ENTIRE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY!!!
He does NOT deserve that Oscar.
THE OSCARS COMMITTEE SHOULD TAKE IT BACK!!
MAKE A STATEMENT ABOUT VIOLENCE!
* * *
That was a slap! What about ... the next time?????
There are 2 things the world can never get enough of: silly love songs and silly sci-fi movies.
Have
you ever watched Signs (2002)? It's a science fiction thriller about crop circles? The crop
circles were obviously a “sign”.
Let
me tie this in with my daily life. I went to the grocery store and
bought a bottle of distilled water. I don't know why … but the
water tasted funny! (O.o)
MEMORY FLASHBACK:
I watched the movie "Signs", several years ago and in the movie Mel Gibson has
two kids – a boy and a girl. I'm guessing the little girl was
about 4 or 5 years old. But every time she would drink a glass of
water, she would always complain that the water tasted funny!
Everybody would just ignore her. It turns out that the funny tasting
water was actually a “sign”. Earth was being invaded by hostile aliens! AAAAHHHH!!!
Oh no! I
hope that water I bought from the store isn't a sign. But just in
case, we better cover our heads with coned hats made out of aluminum
foil. Better safe than sorry. LOL. ☺
If you like sci-fi flicks, or you're fan of Mel Gibson or Joaquin Phoenix, or if you've ever wondered whether there is a connection between those mysterious crop circles and aliens ... this movie is for you!
My late mother loved gardening. She had a way of arranging flowers in the front yard of our home, based on the season of the year. Do you remember back in the day when neighbors used to visit each other and sit outside and talk? Well, I have a memory of one evening when my mom and some of her friends were sitting outside talking. I don't know what season of the year it was, but when I came outside there was a wonderful scent in the air. I had to interrupt the adult conversation and ask my mom what was that delightful odor I was smelling. She told me it was the gardenias she had planted and that in the evening was the best time to smell their fragrance.
Later on in life (in my teens), I learned about a jazz singer named Billie Holiday and she loved using gardenias to adorn her hair. I must say that she looked quite stylish. I wanted to copy her style so I bought fake flower hair ornaments. Sharing an image of the late Billie Holiday. She was a great jazz vocalist but she had a really sad life. They did a movie about her life and Diana Ross played her part. The movie was called “Lady Sings the Blues” (1972). Some say a lot of the bio details are not accurate. But don't most movies about famous people change details in the name of “artistic license”? The film was adapted from a book, her autobiography by the same name, published by Doubleday in 1956. Anyway! Entertainment-wise, it was a really good film. It's listed at TCM (Turner Classic Movies). Even if you don't watch the movie, you should listen to music. The soundtrack is pretty awesome!
In Memory Of: Eleanora Fagan Gough (1915-1959). She chose the stage name “Billie Holiday” and was nicknamed “Lady Day” by Lester Young, a saxophonist in the Count Basie Orchestra. The two worked together in nightclubs on New York's 52nd St.
Watching Korean dramas is my guilty pleasure. I especially like the
historical period dramas, during the Joseon period. I have published a
few detailed reviews of K-dramas here on Read.Cash. But I also shared some quickie reviews on its partner site, Noise.Cash, which I am recapping below.
If you have not watched these you should add them to your watch list.
If you have watched them, let me know if enjoyed them too!
The main character is a feisty little innocent girl who is fiercely
loyal to her family and friends, but has the courage, inner strength and
determination to break with tradition, and find her own way in a cruel
world that is not a very nice place for a low-born; especially not a
low-born young girl.
This series is 60 episodes, with an extraordinary cast, and based on a
true story. It is a real life love story between a king and a woman he
took to be his concubine: Dong Yi (played by Han Hyo-joo) and King
Sukjong (played by Ji Jin-hee).
It's a love story with a bold and daring hero who is not only an
expert swordsman, but knows how to handle a pistol and a rifle. His love
interest is an intelligent woman whose father is a scholar and allowed
her to learn (although she had to dress up like a man to attend school).
They both dream of their country, Joseon, as a land that will one day
be populated with free people. His enemies thought they had killed him,
but he was saved and taken to another country. He returned to Joseon
with a new identity, and determined to settle old scores. The first time
his beloved sees him again, she faints. He may be wearing different
clothes and using a different name, but he still looked to her like the
man she loved. She thought she had seen a ghost.
A baby who was born in a prison turns out to be a princess. But
before she learned her true identity she was taught by a martial arts
master and first learned how to kick butt!! It's a handy skill to have
if you're going after the bad guys who caused your mother's death. The
main character is Ok Nyeo played by Jin Se Yeon who is on my list for
favorite Korean actresses.
A young prince witnesses horrific bloodshed and commands that it be
stopped. Since he is a small child, his command is disregarded and he is
returned to his father; only to learn that it was his father who
ordered the bloodshed. To add insult to injury, his mother is
“accidentally” killed (really she was murdered). From that day forward,
he not only hates his father, HE HATES EVERYBODY! Everybody except his
close friend. He was forced into a marriage of convenience. His wife,
the princess, becomes pregnant by another man. In an effort to cover
this up, the father-in-law (the father of the princess) attempts to kill
the prince. The attempt fails. Trying to escape his assassins, the
prince falls down a slope and hits his head. A poor man finds him, takes
care of him as best he can while he is unconscious. When he regains his
consciousness, he does not remember who he is. The poor man tells him
that he is his daughter's husband-to-be and that they must marry
immediately or his daughter will be flogged.
For 100 days, he lives the simple life of a commoner and falls in
love. He is found by his father-in-law and brought back to the palace.
His memory has not returned. But slowly bits and pieces of incidents
from his past, like puzzle pieces, begin to come together. His story
begins … AGAIN! He realizes who he is and what he needs to do. He also
knows what he wants to do. He wants to marry the woman he fell in love
with as a commoner, who is also the little girl he met when he was a
child and had promised he would marry some day.
A young prince meets and makes friends with a nobleman's daughter,
when they were children. An accident happens on a boat and the girl he
met is tossed overboard. Her father believes that she drowned. Her
sister grows up and the prince, now king chooses her to be his bride;
not realizing that she is the twin sister and NOT the girl he met when
he was younger. Corrupt officials arrange to have both King Lee Kyung
and his queen, Kang Eun Bo, assassinated on their wedding day. They
succeed in killing the sister but the king miraculously comes back to
life. The people are terrified of him. How can he possibly come back
from the dead? The twin sister realizes that her sister has been
murdered. She takes her sister's body and secretly buries it. Then she
returns to the palace AS IF she has also risen from the dead, just like
the king. The king not knowing that she is the young girl he had met as a
child, also believes his wife has come back to life. However, the twin
sister's main purpose for returning to the palace is to discover who
murdered her sister. For all she knew, even the king may have been
involved. But she eventually realizes his innocence and falls in love
with him. The problem is that she has already deceived him into
believing that she is the one who died. This makes their personal
relationship very complicated. As if life in the palace wasn't already
complicated with all of the scheming, conniving, ruthless, greedy
politicking that was going on. Oh! Did I mention the prophecy?
Goo Hae-ryung is a female historian. Prince Dowon (or Yi Rim) is a
young prince who has been sheltered from the outside world. These two
main characters are adorably cute! But they have had some tragedy in
their young lives. They both lost their fathers through violence. Of
course, the adults around them try to hide the truth. But the two of
them trying to uncover the truth makes for a good plot.
The time is during the transitional period between the end of the
Goryeo dynasty and the beginning of the Joseon dynasty, which is why it
is “The New Age”. A king, princes, military leaders, all engaged in a
power struggle to build a new country. Seo Hwi and Nam Seon-ho are two
childhood friends have the power of their friendship “tested”. Things
happen to them, they get separated, and become enemies due to a
misunderstanding about "my country." One of them decides his country is
“the country of the abandoned”.
“'Bossam' in the Korean title refers to a customary remarriage
procedure that took place during the Joseon period. At that time, a
widow could not remarry. A single man or widower would kidnap the widow
and marry her. Some of the kidnappings were agreed upon in advance and
others were by force.” (Quote Source: https://asianwiki.com/Bossam:_Steal_the_Fate)
Here's the story. Two friends earn their living by kidnapping widows.
It's a steady paying job because … evidently, a lot of widows want to
be kidnapped and remarried. However, there is one widow who does not
have this on her mind. She just happened to be sitting outside and the
kidnapper happened to go to the wrong house and … uh oh! … she is
accidentally kidnapped. You think this problem is easy to solve. The guy
made a mistake, so all he needs to do is take her back home. Right?
WRONG! The lady who was kidnapped turns put to be a princess. Her
father, the king, wants to see her. Since her father-in-law did not know
how or why she disappeared or where she was, HE LIED! He told the king
his daughter committed suicide, having died from the grief of being a
widow. The king finds out that his daughter is alive and wants to use
this fact to trap the father-in-law and get rid of him for treason. The
father-in-law also finds out she is alive and the entire series is him
trying to have her killed so that he doesn't get caught in his LIE!
When I was growing up Sunday afternoon were special. My big sister and I loved to watch movies on TV. We especially both loved Bette Davis; whether she was a bad lady or a good girl, she was a SUPER STAR!!
In this particular movie, she was Julie Morrison, a brazen sassy boldacious Southern belle. She dared to be an independent woman with a mind of her own, who challenged society's norms. In the process of her being rebellious, arrogant, and contrary, she caused a rift between her and her future husband. What did she do that was so outrageous and shaemful? Uumm … she showed up to a party in a red dress!
I was very young at the time and being that red is my favorite color, I didn't get what all the huffing and puffing was about. My older sister explained to me that refined and cultured women in polite society would never wear a red dress. That's the mark of a whore!! A wicked woman!! A she-devil!!
With that very clear and graphic explanation provided by my big sister, I was able to better understand this scene and this line in the movie; and that also explains the name of the movie.
♦ Filmsite Movie Review: Jezebel (1938) ~ "The film earned a total of five Academy Award nominations with two major Oscar victories. Bette Davis won her second (and last) Academy Award for her portrayal of the tempestuous, manipulative Southern ante-bellum New Orleans belle for Warner Bros."
You know what they say about classic novels? They are the books that everybody has on their book shelf at home, but nobody reads them.☺ This post has a couple of apologies.
FIRST APOLOGY: I apologize to Victor Hugo. I have never read any of his novels. But I do know that they must have been really really good, because a few of Hugo's novels were adapted to film. As an adult I've watched a few of those movies. But as a child I only remember one film based on Victor Hugo's iconic 1831 novel: "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", released in 1939.
WOW! What a movie! Loved that scene where Quasimodo, the hunchback (Charles Laughton), lifts the gypsy girl Esmeralda (Maureen O’Hara) into the air and shouts “Sanctuary! Sanctuary!!” Made quite an impression on my young mind. ☺
SECOND APOLOGY: I have to apologize to those who decided on a remake of this classic which was released in 1997. When this movie was first released I did not watch it because I thought it would not measure up to the 1939 movie I had watched as a child. But one night I was looking for something to watch on YouTube and found it. I was so wrong! This remake is actually quite good. Salma Hayek stars as Esmeralda, the gypsy woman. Mandy Patinkin is Quasimodo; and Richard Harris is Dom Claude Frollo. The supporting actors were excellent; and the scenery was awesome!
Fun Fact:
The filming locations were Budapest, Hungary; Prague, Czech Republic; and Rouen, France.

If you were to ask any Brando fan to name their favorite Brando movies, I seriously doubt that "The Ugly American" would be on anybody's list. Nevertheless, I'm recommending this movie. Why? Because ...
The novel “The Ugly American” was published in 1958 and in 1963, the book was adapted to film by Universal Pictures. Marlon Brando (1924 – 2004) played the part of Ambassador Harrison Carter MacWhite. Many critics gave Brando great reviews for his acting; however other critics did not have praise for either the movie or Brando. If you're a fan, you can watch this movie on YouTube, in English, with Spanish subtitles and decide for yourself.

We all know that Disney makes #movies that are for kids, but adults enjoy them too. “Cruella” was just released in 2021 and no doubt fans of Emma Stone (“La La Land”) will love it. It has already received such great reviews that they are planning a “Cruella 2”.
If you watched “101 Dalmatians” don't expect the same kind of movie. In “101 Dalmatians”, the villainess was Cruella De Vil, the name is a derivative of Cruel Devil and she was really wicked! However, in “Cruella”, a baby named Estella is born who is nicknamed Cruella. She is an unwanted child, her own mother tries to dispose of her, but she lives. She grows up to be “opinionated, rebellious and strong-willed” and she's out for revenge.
Yeah. Uhhh … not a typical “Disney wholesome kiddie” plot. Sort of seems like it was made for an adult audience. I mean ... I would watch this movie. But I'm not sure I'd recommend it for children under the age of 12. But that's just me. Also, I would watch it because I'm a huge fan of Emma Thompson (not Emma Stone). Emma Thompson is an enormously talented British actress who brings class and elegance to any film she stars in.

(English:
Never Say Good Bye; also known as KANK.)
This
Bollywood movie was released in 2006 and it was very controversial
among the Indian audience. (Americans would not have raised an
eyebrow.) Even though it was a really good movie with powerhouse
actors and actresses, I didn't like it. The life lesson is plain and
the 4 main characters learned this lesson the hard way. I did not
like it because they could have learned the very same lesson in life
without making those horrible mistakes. In real life, hardships and
pain can definitely be avoided if you think wisely. But of course,
it was just a movie. Another reviewer said this: “Realistic and
wonderful movie” TO “A disappointing rendering of a sensitive
emotion”.

In the late 60s my life was changed completely. I was introduced Cuban culture, traditions, history, art, music, etc. and to be perfectly honest, I really liked the “flavor”. I enjoyed a style of dancing called Salsa. Rather, I enjoyed watching others do salsa dancing. Me? Dance? I have 2 left feet. LOL.
FUN FACT: Did you know “salsa” was a marketing term invented by American marketers to serve as a catch-all word to lump various forms of Cuban music together and sell it to the Americans?
‘Salsa’ is a 1970’s marketing term coined by New York City music publishers. Their goal was to package the many musical genres popular in Latin America for a US market. The term ‘Salsa’ allowed a single comprehensive grouping on the record shelves. Salsa’s original musical genres, all native to Cuba, centered primarily around son montuno and mambo, together with guaracha, charanga, chachachá, and guaguanco.
