Korean Drama: TV Series: Shine or Go Crazy (2015)

"Shine or Go Crazy" (alternate title:  "Shine or Be Mad") was released in 2015 and it is a "gem".  If you have not already watched, then add this Korean drama series to your watch list. It has 24 episodes and is available on Viki.com.

Talk about palace intrigue. It's loaded with murder by poison, spies who spy on the spies, and warriors on different sides. The good guy warriors or the "Righteous" wear BLACK. The bad guy warriors wear RED. It is set during the period BEFORE the Joseon era when the country was called Goryeo. The main character is Wang So (played by Jang Hyuk) and he is the cursed Prince of Goryeo who is destined to become the emperor. But!  Will he be a good emperor or a bad emperor?

The reason the series is called “Shine or Go Crazy” is because when his future or fate was read, it was determined that he was born with both a light and fire. That means he will either shine bright like a star OR he'll be a madman. We won't know until the last episode. LOL.

Is there a love triangle? Of course! It's a Korean drama! There is more than one love triangle and some interesting family ties. I love all of those complicated relationships.

I have a silly complaint though. I don't really like the costumes from the Goryeo Dynasty (AD 918-1392). I like the clothes they wore during the Joseon historical period. But hey! It's history. If that was the fashion back then, I'll just have to accept it.

Movie Recommendation for Fans of Sophia Loren: Sunflower (1970)

Did you know that sunflowers turn to follow the sun? In Greek mythology, a young nymph fell in love with the sun god Apollo. What do you think the gods did to her?  It's a tragic love story.  The movie "Sunflower" which stars Sophia Loren is also a tragic love story.  Where to Watch.

But the sunflower has more than one love story.

Do you enjoy old movies? Are you also a fan of Sophia Loren? If so, you may have already seen this film, but if you haven't, it comes highly recommended. (That means my husband liked it! ☺) It's a very moving love story about a newly wedded couple. The woman's husband went to war and did not return home. Even though others tell her he is probably dead, she believes her husband is alive and sets out to prove it.  "In the Soviet Union, Giovanna visits the sunflower fields, where there is supposedly one flower for each fallen Italian soldier, and where the Germans forced the Italians to dig their own mass graves."  (Quote Source)

That's it! No spoilers. That's all you'll get out of me, except to say that, this movie would make a great addition to your personal video library. Ms. Loren has starred in many movies that just didn't enough publicity or airtime. This is one of them.

The Deadly Hands of Kung Fu ~ A Kung Fu Comic Book

I have watched the movie “Enter the Dragon” many times. The movie came out in 1973. The first time I saw it was memorable. I went with my big sister to the movies. To watch it. That fight scene with the mirrors is burned in my memory.

In 2015, I stumbled upon this cool art. I never knew there was a comic book! Isn't the Internet a wonderful thing?

If you are a loyal Bruce Lee fan then I have no doubt that you love this picture! Below is a description of what it is.

The Deadly Hands of Kung Fu

"The Deadly Hands of Kung Fu was an American black-and-white martial arts comics magazine published by Magazine Management, a corporate sibling of Marvel Comics. A total of 33 issues were published from 1974 to 1977, plus one special edition. Additionally, a color Marvel comic titled simply Deadly Hands of Kung Fu was published as a 2014 miniseries.” (SOURCE: Wikipedia)

Entertainment Trivia: Famous People Who Worked at McDonald's

American entertainer Pharell Williams; American politician Paul Ryan; and American weatherman Willard Scott used to work at McDonald's.  No surprise because the first job one of my kids got was working at McDonald's. This restaurant hires a lot of teens. Who knows what their future holds? But McDonald's should take some credit for helping to encourage their work ethic. 😊

My Favorite Korean Actress: Kim Yoo Jung

ReelRundown is a fun site that publishes lists like this one:

Top 10 Most Successful and Beautiful Korean Drama Actresses – ReelRundown.

On this list my favorite actress is Number 10. Kim Yoo Jung.

She has been acting since she was a child and I like to call her the “Korean Shirley Temple” because her acting skills, even from when she was a little girl was impressive.  No surprise she has grown up in the business and they still offer her parts.  I have seen her in many series and movies and even when she played a support role or a small part, I still liked her.  She comes across as being a beautiful person, both inside and out. Just to name a few of the roles that I remember her from:

* Tamra Island

* Dong Yi

* Iljimae

* Love in the Moonlight

* Moon Embracing the Sun

Most recently, she starred in A Viki Original Series, “Lovers of the Red Sky”.  (I published a review on Read.Cash. )

Continuing Education: Introduction to Arabic Philosophy (with Suggested Reading)

When you tackle a topic like this the best place to start your research is in a reputable and reliable encyclopedia like the Encyclopedia Brittanica. A perusal of several EB articles revealed the following eye-opening facts:

~ Islamic philosophy and Arabic philosophy, are phrases that are used interchangeably and the beginning of the philosophical movements in the Islamic world dates back to the 9th century.

~ Arabic philosophy combined the Western philosophies of Aristotelianism and Neoplatonism with other ideas introduced through Islam.

~ Al-Kindī is honored as being the first Muslim philosopher. He was known as “the philosopher of the Arabs”. How did he know so much about Western philosophy? Because he was appointed by the Abbasid Caliphs to work alongside his contemporaries, and translate Greek philosophical and scientific works into Arabic.

~ An important distinction must be made between Islamic philosophy versus Islamic theology (or religion). That distinction is that … it is very similar to Western philosophy in that the philosophers sort of try to eliminate God or Divine Intervention from the picture and rely on non-religious secular human reasoning and science to explain TRUTH and the UNIVERSE.

~ In addition to Al-Kindī, others who made significant contributions to Arabic philosophy in the medieval Islamic world include: al-Farabi and Avicenna (Persia); Averroës (Andalusian Spain); and Ibn Khaldūn (Egypt).

~ Curiously, Christian and Jewish thinkers also participated in and influenced the Islamic or Arabic philosophical movements.

~ The first period from the 9th to the 12th (or 14th) century is referred to as classical or early Islamic philosophy. After that time, interest in the movement declined due to lack of supporters. However, there were and are still those who pursued a course of philosophical study to this day.

The articles in the Encyclopedia Brittanica provided a great introduction to Islamic/Arabic philosophy. Additionally, I would like to recommend one more article published via Encyclopedia.com which is a much easier read. Four (4) Authors of Books Recommended for Juvenile and Young Adults

At one time I wanted to write children's books. But that aspiration was never achieved. In the process of trying to learn how to write books for children, I developed a guilty pleasure. I started reading books for children. There are four (4) authors who writes books for juvenile and young adults. There is no reason why old adults can't enjoy reading their books too.

books

Madeleine L'Engle ( 1918-2007)

The late Madeleine L'Engle (born in New York City) established herself as a young adult writer. Her last book, The Joys of Love, was published in 2008, posthumously. But I will always remember her for her book A Wrinkle in Time, published 1962. Like Ms. Paterson's book, Ms. L'Engle's book was also turned into a movie . Per Anita Silvey's Children's Book-A-Day Almanac: "On March 12, 1963, the New York Times wrote 'A housewife and an artist today won the nation's top awards for the most distinguished children's book published in 1962.' This statement doesn't even hint at the truth-that the most courageous committee in the history of the Newbery and Caldecott Awards had just announced its results. [...]" There is only one thing that puzzled me about this book. Why wasn't this book listed as "required reading" in my school curriculum? That was then. Perhaps it's different now, as my teenage daughter has Ms. L'Engle's book on her desk, along with other books that were required reading during my school days. Books like: Harper Lee's, To Kill a Mockingbird; George Orwell's, Animal Farm; Charles Dickens', Great Expectations, and Nathaniel Hawthorne's, The Scarlet Letter. Madeleine L'Engle's, A Wrinkle in Time has earned a place among them.

Katherine Paterson (1932 -)

Katherine Paterson (born in Huai'an, China) is another writer of books for young readers who may now be well known because of the movie Bridge to Terabithia , which was based on her book by the same name. I know Ms. Paterson because of her book "Rebels of the Heavenly Kingdom", a tale about a secret God-worshipping group and the Taiping Rebellion, set in 1851 in China. Ms. Paterson was born in 1932 in China to missionary parents and was a teacher and a missionary in Japan. No doubt this background was integral to the writing of this piece of historical fiction. Oprah recommends her!

Laurence Yep (1948 -)

Laurence Yep (born in San Francisco, California) holds the reputation as the premier Chinese-American writer. He is best known for his book Dragonwings . Dragonwings is the first in a series of nine books collectively called the Golden Mountain Chronicles . It is a fictional work that combines the historical event of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the experience of Chinese immigrants in California and a flying machine. I'm sure that unique mix sounds intriguing and you want to know more.

JaneYolen (1939 - )

I stumbled upon Jane Yolen (born in New York City), in the juvenile section of the library, when I was trying to get ideas for subjects to write about. To date, Ms. Yolen has authored 300 children's and fantasy/sci-fi books. In addition, she has written thousands of poems and short stories. Ms. Yolen has been called, "the Hans Christian Andersen of America" by Newsweek; and the "modern equivalent of Aesop" by The New York Times. It is very difficult to pick a favorite from her writings, because every time I read one of her works, it easily makes it to the list of "Favorites". I love reading Ms. Yolen's fantasy writing. According to Fantastic Fiction Limited, a UK based website, which provides bibliographies for over 30,000 authors of fiction, "Jane Yolen is one of the acknowledged masters of fantasy today."

book

Books written for young adults are often a very quick read (less than 300 pages). You should try it. Select any of the books by the authors profiled above. If you would like more suggestions, check Al's Book Club for Kids or the Kids' Reading List published by Oprah Winfrey. Or, if you have an opportunity to go to your local public library, consult the librarian for advice. Go ahead and indulge your inner child.

A book, too, can be a star, “explosive material, capable of stirring up fresh life endlessly,” a living fire to lighten the darkness, leading out into the expanding universe.”

~ Madeleine L'Engle, "A Wrinkle in Time"

Houses don’t mean much. It’s the people inside them that are important, ...”

~ Laurence Yep, "Dragonwings"

Under Heaven all men are brothers....”

~ Katherine Paterson, "Rebels of the Heavenly Kingdom"

The thing I want to know is, if you tell your brain not to do stuff... and it keeps doing it anyway, does that mean your mind has a mind of its own? And if it does, then who's in charge here, anyway?”

Jane Yolen & Bruce Coville, "Armageddon Summer"

Netflix Original: Korean Dramedy TV Series: My Only Love Song (2017)

Rewatched “My Only Love Song” (2017). It's a Korean drama, a Netflix Original Series. It's silly, cute, adorable, and totally unbelievable! And yes, I did say “rewatched”. I watched it a few years back and wanted to watch something that wasn't really serious, so I watched it again.

It's one of those time-travel series. An actress who was starring in a fictional historical Korean drama, gets into a van named “Boong Boong” and the van sets the GPS destination and takes her through the time portal where she ends up in a real life historical Korean drama

What I like about the main character, On Dal (played by Lee Jong-hyun), is that he looks like Johnny Depp from Pirates of the Caribbean when he puts on his fake moustache. LOL.

I also like the two guys who are support actors.

(1) Byun Sam-yong (played by Lee Jae-jin) who looks like such a sweet baby boy. You want everything to work out for him in the end.

(2) Moo-myung (played by Ahn Bo-hyun). He is the humble and loyal bodyguard for the princess but he is also in love with her. He never talks, yet everybody knows what he's saying. LOL. To best decribe him, I borrowed a line from Byun Sam-yong: “He looks cool without even trying.”

The leading ladies and the support female cast? Song Soo-jung (played by Gong Seung-yeon) and Princess Pyunggang (played by Jin Ye-ju). Eh! They were OK. But it's the guys who actually carried the series through from start to finish.

It's 20 episodes and lots of fun!

Favorite Actor: Tommy Lee Jones

Are you a fan of Tommy Lee Jones? Many people know him for his comedic role in “Men in Black“ (1997). He co-starred with Will Smith and they were a team tasked with the responsibility of ridding of the world of bad aliens. He was an adorable good guy.

By contrast, Mr. Jones can also be a really scary bad guy. In the movie “The Executioner’s Song”, he was a heartless cold-blooded killer! Ever saw this movie? Remember that scene where he robbed the gas station and what he did to the gas station attendant? He was a very convincing bad guy. So convincing that he earned an Emmy Award.

There are some actors who, in my opinion, can only play good guys. Tommy Lee Jones can be either good or bad. But I prefer him as a good guy. I really liked him in “The Fugitive” (1993) with Harrison Ford and the sequel, “U.S. Marshals” (1998), where he was paired with Wesley Snipes. I also liked him as the villain Two-Face, in Batman Forever (1995).

Throwback Thursday: David Bowie - This Is Not America (1985)

David Robert Jones OAL (1947 – 2016), known professionally as David Bowie, music icon and legend. This song is from the soundtrack of a movie titled “The Falcon and the Snowman", released in the 80s. It's 2021, and the current situation in my country, the USA, makes me think of this song a lot!

David Bowie - This Is Not America (1985)

David Bowie

The Falcon and the Snowman (1985) ~ A True Story

Ever see the movie "The Falcon and the Snowman" (1985)

I once worked for the federal government. I understand how a young man like Christopher Boyce who came from a typical middle class white American Catholic family ... could become disillusioned he when comes to the knowledge that his beloved country, the United States of America, is not ... "perfect".  After all, that's not what he was taught or raised to believe.

Even though I'm African-American and grew up in segregated neighborhood, I can empathize with how he felt. I was taught the same thing.  America is the land of the free, the home of the brave,  We're righteous and the other countries should follow our example.  Even though I understand Mr. Boyce, I refuse to justify what he did. Ideals or not, HE WAS WRONG!

So America is not "without sin". But can any other country say that they are sinless?  You don't like what's happening in America?  Stay here and change it!!  At least you care.  The other country you're selling out to, could care less.

This is a very good movie.  I rate it 5 out of 5 stars.  The soundtrack gets 10 stars!  David Bowie is English but he sang the song "This is Not America", like he was an American

*(View the official movie trailer.)

"The Falcon and the Snowman" starred Timothy Hutton and Sean Penn. I think the movie should be incorporated into an orientation training class for all civil servants who work in the law enforcement agencies “ CIA, NSA, ICE, FBI, etc. The movie was intense. Riveting! A favorite word used by official movie critics. The best part of the movie for me is David Bowie and Pat Metheny on the soundtrack. But I digress. The movie is about a young guy (Christopher Boyce, played by Timothy Hutton) who works for the government and learns that "things" are not what they appear to be and feels betrayed by his country. He gets angry about it “ as any red-blooded patriot would - and decides to sells secrets to "The Enemy". He recruits his childhood friend (Daulton Lee, played by Sean Penn) who is a dope head! Long story short. In the end, they both go to prison.  There is also a book written about this story as well.

The Falcon and the Snowman: A True Story of Friendship and Espionage by Robert Lindsey (2002-06-02)

In between, Mr. Lee gets caught and accused of murder. Of course, he didn't commit the murder but that didn't stop the law enforcement authorities who captured him from grilling him, thoroughly interrogating him, and torturing him to get the truth out of him.
After all is said and done “ they say "He did!," - he say "He didn't! He's just a tourist, a businessman." - there's a scene where he's about to be released and a man walks in and says something to the effect: "We're going to give you 2 choices." Before the man could tell what the choices were, Mr. Lee (Sean Penn) looks up at the guy, weary, scared, demoralized and says in questioning tone of voice: "Costa Rica?" I CRACKED UP LAUGHING!! I thought to myself: 'Now ain't that sumthin! They done beat the crap about this boy and he is totally weakened and confused, but he still had the clarity of mind to try to negotiate to get sent to Costa Rica!!' :)

Kismat Konnection (2008) is a Delightful Bollywood Movie

Are you a fan of Shahid Kapoor?

When people say “Kismet” or “Kismat”, they mean it's your fate or destiny. The word is derived from the Arabic qisma, meaning "portion" or "lot." I first heard this word watching a Bollywood movie, “Kismat Konnection” (2008) which starred Shahid Kapoor.

The female lead is Vidya Balan.  As of September 2022, it was still streaming on Netflix.  "A man finds his lucky charm in the form of a woman whom he had once clashed with on every level, but on whose presence he must now rely to succeed."

When I did some research I found out this film was a remake of an American movie, “Just My Luck” which starred Lindsay Lohan. Since I'm not a Lohan fan, I didn't know anything about that movie. Since I am a huge Shahid Kapoor, I would highly recommend watching this movie. You'll love it! It's delightful!  Totally PG!

Thanks for visiting my entertainment blog. While you're here, check out some of the other posts tagged "Bollywood".  It is a wide variety of films, drama, romance, and comedy.

TV Series: Supernatural Drama: Sleepy Hollow (2013 - 2017)

Sleepy Hollow is an American supernatural drama TV series. It ran from 2013 to 2017. It is a "modern-day retelling" of the 1820 short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" written by American author Washington Irving. The short story was published in 1819.

I enjoyed this show right up until they killed off one of the main characters.

I was like: WHAT???

Don't you just hate that?

Don't you hate when you become attached to the characters and they kill them??!!

Sleepy Hollow

They tried to keep this show going but it was cancelled. What did they expect from the fans? (SleepyHollow’ Canceled at Fox After Four Seasons ~variety.com)

The leading couple in this series was Ichabod Crane played by Tom Mison; and Lieutenant Abbie Mills played by Nicole Beharie. They had great onscreen chemistry. When they killed Abbie, that was it for me! I didn't watch the show any more!

TV Series: Murdoch Mysteries is Perfect for Mystery Lovers

I am grateful to Netflix for introducing me to Canadian TV series. One of those series which I thoroughly enjoyed was “Murdoch Mysteries”. The program is about Detective William Murdoch. He's a genius; a Sherlock-Holmes-type who not only has a brilliant mind but also comes up with brilliant inventions to help him solves crimes. The setting is Toronto, Canada, at the turn of the 20th century, when Canada was still under or linked to the British and Westerners were just learning how useful electricity is and how to drive motor cars.

Unfortunately the series is no longer available on Netflix. So I hunt for sites that have free online video streaming of this show and that way I can continue watching. I got attached to Detective Murdoch, his wife, Doctor Julia Ogden, and the entire cast.

It's rated PG. It's good family entertainment.

You can find a lot of the episodes on YouTube for free or for rent.

CELEBRITY BIRTHDAYS: Happy birthday Zendaya!

Today is September 1, 2022.
Folks on Twitter are wishing Zendaya a happy birthday. ❤️

To be honest, I know she started out as a child actress and now she appears in movies. She was chosen as an Lancôme’s newest and youngest ambassador. AND she takes great pictures! The camera loves her.

But I'm not really a fan. Are you a fan? I don't dislike her. I'm just in the wrong generation, so I don't keep up.  However, I would compliment by saying that I think she represents her generation well.

A little bit of entertainment trivia about this lady:

The name Zendaya is primarily a female name of African - Bantu of Zimbabwe origin that means "To Give Thanks." From the Shona (chiShona) language of Zimbabwe/Southern Zambi. (babynames.com/name/Zendaya)

Her full name is: Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman.
My big sister used to say you know you've made it to the big times when people know you by just one name. Just like everybody knows Madonna. Everybody knows Zendaya.

Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world on its annual list in 2022.

Movie: Film Noir: Impact (1949)

I really enjoy a lot of old movies that can easily be found on YouTube. I like mysteries, but especially the genre that is called "film noir".   One such old movie is called "Impact", released in 1949. What I liked was the way the court case played out. If you haven't watched the movie I don't want to spoil the ending. If you like vintage film noir drama you'll probably like this movie.

Quick Movie Review: Georgetown (2019)

If you like crime thrillers, you'll like the movie called "Georgetown" (2019). The name caught my attention because there is Georgetown, Texas, a city near where I live and then there is the Georgetown near Washington, D.C. I used to work in D.C. and it's a lively place. This movie was set in the historic neighborhood of Georgetown, in the District of Columbia (D.C.)
(SPOILER ALERT!)

The reviewers at RogerEbert.com gave the film 2 stars and Rotten Tomatoes gave it 3 stars.  Not sure why the ratings were so low.  High caliber actors were in this film: Vanessa Redgrave, Annette Bening, and Christoph Waltz. I would give 1 star fir each and the another star for the film.  That's 4 stars!

I did not realize until The End that it was based on a true story. Yeah. That creep was an idiot and he really did kill his wife.

The real guy's name is Albrecht Muth.
The name of the character in the movie was Ulrich Mott (played by Christoph Waltz).

In April 2014, Albrecht Muth, 49 years old, of Washington, D.C., was sentenced to 50 years in prison for first-degree murder of his wife.

Even though it would not make my top 10 list, it's a good movie for a Friday night.
