Movie Recommendation for Fans of Sophia Loren: Sunflower (1970)

Did you know that sunflowers turn to follow the sun? In Greek mythology, a young nymph fell in love with the sun god Apollo. What do you think the gods did to her?  It's a tragic love story.  The movie "Sunflower" which stars Sophia Loren is also a tragic love story.  Where to Watch.

But the sunflower has more than one love story.

Do you enjoy old movies? Are you also a fan of Sophia Loren? If so, you may have already seen this film, but if you haven't, it comes highly recommended. (That means my husband liked it! ☺) It's a very moving love story about a newly wedded couple. The woman's husband went to war and did not return home. Even though others tell her he is probably dead, she believes her husband is alive and sets out to prove it.  "In the Soviet Union, Giovanna visits the sunflower fields, where there is supposedly one flower for each fallen Italian soldier, and where the Germans forced the Italians to dig their own mass graves."  (Quote Source)

That's it! No spoilers. That's all you'll get out of me, except to say that, this movie would make a great addition to your personal video library. Ms. Loren has starred in many movies that just didn't enough publicity or airtime. This is one of them.

Best Monica Belluci Movie: Malèna (2000) (Reblog)

Fans of Monica Belluci will likely agree that this was her best film ever!  It's the most touching love story about true genuine everlasting love and about how hateful people can be really cruel to an innocent woman who has done them no wrong.

P.S. The costume designer for this movie gets an A+++. The dresses Ms. Belluci wore were classy and elegant vintage fashion.  I loved every outfit!

Review of Small Island (2009), a BBC Masterpiece Theater TV Drama Series

"Small Island" is a two-part drama adapted for television, included in the BBC Masterpiece Classic Collection, based on a novel by the same title written by Andrea Levy.

*
“Small Island” is a BBC Masterpiece Theater presentation.  The name of the main character is Hortense, an idealistic “proper” young Jamaican woman who dreams of living in England and she will fulfill her dream! It may take a little bit of conniving but … she will make it happen!

The setting is the 1940s; during and after the World War II - Jamaica and London.

* Naomie Harris plays Hortense.  She is something else!!

If the name Naomie Harris sounds familiar, it should. She starred in the James Bond movie, “Skyfall”. At the end of the movie, she is finally formally introduced to Mr. Bond as “Miss Moneypenny”.
Here's the plot in a nutshell.
Hortense has a friend who has a fiancé and that fiancé is in the military and intends to take the friend, who will be his wife, with him when he goes to England. Uh huh. That was the original plan. But Hortense figured out a way to get the guy to ditch the friend and take her to England instead.   As I said:  She is something else!  :)

* David Oyelowo plays Gilbert, the fiancé, scratch that ex-fiancé … dot dot dash … husband of “convenience”.

David Oyelowo. That name sound familiar? It should. He was “Danny” in the popular BBC spook TV show, “MI-5”. Also chosen for the role of “Dr. Martin Luther King”, in the Oscar-nominated film “Selma” about the Civil Rights Movement in America.
“Small Island” is a love story and you will love all of the characters; the ones in the starring roles and the supporting roles. They are very realistic and you will feel like you're a part of their lives.
Authentic costumes, great scenery, believable dialogue, stellar performances, and quality entertainment!

My one word to describe this masterpiece? Delightful!

Most memorable line? “Gilbert! I'm perishin' in this bed!” :)

Faith, Fiction, Friends: “Bartleby, The Scrivener” by Herman Melville (Reblog)

Thanks to my high school English teachers I developed an appreciation for American literature and especially for short stories. Below is a link to an excellent review by a fellow blogger who often shares links to his posts via a Facebook Grop called "Authentic Blogger".  Herman Melville was one of the authors my teachers introduced me to; however, I don't remember reading this particular short story. The review has piqued my interest.  If you don't already know, Mr. Melville is famous for writing "Moby Dick".

Hollywood Screen Legends and Icons: Marilyn Monroe (June 1, 1926 – August 4, 1962)

Today, Marilyn Monroe would be 90+ years old, but the diva passed away in 1962. Many people know her celebrity persona, and she still is viewed as an icon of beauty and femininity. But let’s take a look at her off-screen personality. Here are seven (7) biographical facts.

This marvelous timeline of photographs ~ "A picture of Marilyn for every year she was alive, 1926-1962." ~ source

How to watch and stream Marilyn Monroe movies

1. Marilyn Monroe was born June 1, 1926, Los Angeles, California.

2. Ms. Monroe feared that viewers would think of her as about a "frivolous fool", so she studied and rehearsed earnestly at various acting studios.

3. Despite the fact that Marilyn Monroe is considered a sex symbol, she confessed in her diaries: "I was always very physically clamped. I have always been sure that something is wrong with me."

Image credit:   "A teenage Norma Jeane, later known as Marilyn Monroe. Circa 1940."  Found on Pinterest

4. Marilyn Monroe loved to read. More than 400 books were in her personal library. She did not finish high school and felt the need to continue her education on her own, not only to quench her thirst for knowledge but in order to be on par with others who were blessed to complete a formal education program.

5. Before becoming a famous actress, she worked at an aircraft factory, during the World War II. Her job was crucial, She was checked the serviceability of parachutes. One of the photographers, who was looking for "fresh faces" noticed her there. The rest, as they say, is history.

6. Marilyn Monroe ate very little and could spend an entire day drinking only orange juice. Yet she has never been skinny, according to today's “perfect size” standards (say size 5 by comparison to today's slim petite almost emaciated models who wear a size 2).

7. In order to become the wife of her third husband, Marilyn Monroe converted to Judaism. She was fond of Arthur Miller and trust him a lot. It was his betrayal that completely undermined her faith in people.

Over half a century later, Marilyn Monroe is still revered as a Hollywood legend, an ideal American beauty / diva. Her popularity has not dwindled. It is a pity that her life ended up so early or to quote another diva, Sir Elton John, she was like a “candle in the wind”.

A Woody Allen Classic Clip: Being Jewish Among Gentiles (Reblog)

This movie won an Oscar but I've never heard of heard of it. That's because I am not really a Woody Allen fan. I know that there are many many people who praise him for is comedic genius, but I was just never into him. However, after reading this movie review, I have added it to my watch list. I'm going to save this for a day when it's rainy or cold and I've comfy under a warm blanket with a bucket of popcorn. Or? Maybe I shouldn't have any popcorn because according to the movie reviewer I'm going to be laughing a lot!  I don't want to choke and cough all through the movie. ☺☺

"It's been 36 years since the release of Annie Hall, the Woody Allen film that won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director (Allen) and Best Actress (Diane Keaton.) But still the movie attracts viewers and stirs funny memories wherever it's shown. ..."

Disney's Cruella Movie Review (Reblog)

We all know that Disney makes #movies that are for kids, but adults enjoy them too. “Cruella” was just released in 2021 and no doubt fans of Emma Stone (“La La Land”) will love it. It has already received such great reviews that they are planning a “Cruella 2”.

If you watched “101 Dalmatians” don't expect the same kind of movie. In “101 Dalmatians”, the villainess was Cruella De Vil, the name is a derivative of Cruel Devil and she was really wicked! However, in “Cruella”, a baby named Estella is born who is nicknamed Cruella. She is an unwanted child, her own mother tries to dispose of her, but she lives. She grows up to be “opinionated, rebellious and strong-willed” and she's out for revenge.

Yeah. Uhhh … not a typical “Disney wholesome kiddie” plot. Sort of seems like it was made for an adult audience. I mean ... I would watch this movie. But I'm not sure I'd recommend it for children under the age of 12. But that's just me. Also, I would watch it because I'm a huge fan of Emma Thompson (not Emma Stone). Emma Thompson is an enormously talented British actress who brings class and elegance to any film she stars in.

Best Kevin Costner Movies (Reblog)

I always like to check the lists of others to see if I agree.  I can't believe The Manual ranked "Dances With Wolves" as Number Two on their list of best Kevin Costner movies.  I totally disagree!  It's Number One!  Nevertheless, they produced a great list.  I've seen every movie on the list EXCEPT the one they ranked as Number One.  LOL. ☺

I also agree with The Manual that Kevin Costner is the quintessential All-American guy.  Even when he's not playing an American.  Yes!  There was a movie where he was not an American.

Do you know which movie I'm talking about?  LOL.

Six (6) Movie Reviews from The Entertainment Factor (Reblog)

Every now and then I try to show some support for fellow bloggers who publish blogs using Blogspot.  The Entertainment Factor publishes a wide range of reviews - movies, TV shows, music, and video games.  I clicked on the link for FILM REVIEWS.  There is interesting the posts in this section of the blog.  By percentage.  The reviews are sorted by score so I started with the highest score, 100%, and started working my way down.  I searched for movies that I had watched to see if I agreed with TEF's recommendations.  Found 6 movies that I enjoyed watching and it seems TEF agrees with me.

The King's Speech (2010)

THE KING'S SPEECH (2010)

EXCERPT: "After the death of his father, and the abdication of his elder brother, George (Colin Firth), or Bertie to his friends, is forced to assume the throne on the eve of World War II. This is the true story of King George VI, who led Britain through war. However, he had a very difficult impediment to overcome before he could make his mark in history. A speech impediment. It's quite obvious that any great leader needs to be an equally great speechmaker, so, the stammering sovereign's wife, Queen Elizabeth enlists the help of australian speech therapist Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush) who, through some unusual techniques and by offering his sincere friendship, helps George overcome not just his stammer, but also the roots of all his problems, fear and insecurity."

I give this movie 5 out of 5 stars.
The Entertainment Factor gave it a score of 100%.
WE AGREE!!

Review of Ayumi’s Violin by Mariko Tatsumoto (Reblog)

This post is from the blog of a dear friend who writes book reviews. She chooses books in a variety of different categories: from animal stories to tutorials, fiction and non-fiction. When I really want to indulge myself, I read a children's book or I listen to music or do both. I particularly enjoy the violin

I appreciate books for children that address cultural diversity and that encourage children to become interested in music. That's why I chose this specific post to reblog.  Also this is a "coming to America" story.  It makes me feel so blessed that I was born in America and that no matter what others might say about my country ... this is truly a land of opportunity!

Classic Movies: The Wreck of the Mary Deare (1959) (Reblog)

It's probably the saddest and most heart-breaking movie, with an awesome soundtrack, about a shipwreck. But the Titanic isn't the only movie about a shipwreck. What about the Mary Deare?

I heart classic movies.
  • True stories about shipwrecks or ships lost at sea always tantalize you. You just got to know what happened! However, if you never really quite know all the truth, you can always make something up!
  • The Wreck of the Mary Deare is a classic movie that stars two powerhouse American actors, Gary Cooper (1901 - 1961) and Charlton Heston (1923 - 2008). Based on a novel by Ralph Hammond Innes.

Random Mexican’s Movie Reviews: MOVIE REVIEW: UNHINGED (Reblog)

This reblog is from one of my favorite blogs for movie reviews. It's a quick review of a 2020 film which stars Russell Crowe.  I have followed Mr. Crowe's acting career but to be honest I have only really liked him as the Gladiator.  Based on this review, it could be added to your watch list for Friday night movies IF you don't mind movies rated C+.  In other words, you'll watch it only because you like Russell Crowe.
"Unhinged is a 2020 American thriller film directed by Derrick Borte, from a screenplay by Carl Ellsworth. ... It’s a brutal trip into madness that makes this film feel more like a horror film than a straightforward thriller. ..."

Reviewed By Sam: Independence Day Movie Review (Reblog)

Movie suggestions from a fellow blogger on what to watch for the 4th of July, America's Independence Day.
I have seen the first movie but not the sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence.  That would be kind of fun to watch them both back-to-back for the holiday. Set up a watch party with friends and everybody can bring their own popcorn!

FLOWERS OF SHANGHAI (1998) - Criterion Collection (Reblog)

This post, in fact, this entire blog is too wonderful to not reblog and call attention to. I love Asian cinema and this classic Taiwanese drama film has been aptly described by the blog publisher with these words:
"Composed in a languorous procession of entrancing long takes, Flowers of Shanghai evokes a vanished world of decadence and cruelty, an insular universe where much of the dramatic action remains tantalizingly offscreen—even as its emotional fallout registers with quiet devastation."

2 Movie Reviews: 3 Days to Kill & Pompeii (Reblog)

A year ago today this link was shared via my Facebook profile. Now it's being shared via My Blog Stop! Have to laugh because the reviewer wrote something about Kevin Costner that is so true true true! She refers to “3 Days to Kill” (2014), which stars Costner as “forgettable fun” [watch trailer].  Regarding her review of “Pompeii” [watch trailer], also released in 2014?  Simply stated, it “isn't a very good movie”.

So why watch these flicks?
  • Brutal honesty. The guys are hunks!  :)
That's what you get when you read the reviews published via this blog.  I like that! :)
