11 A.M. ~ We Only Time-Traveled for 15 Minutes and Saw 'The End'

11 A.M. is a 2013 Korean film, categorized as Science Fiction (Sci-Fi), Time Travel, Thriller, streaming on Tubi TV and The Roku Channel. The film blends time-travel mystery with psychological thriller elements.

  • Memorable Quote: “Time travel is possible.” … “Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.” (Proverbs 27: 1)

11 A.M. blends sci-fi time travel with psychological thriller intensity as a team of deep-sea researchers tests a prototype capable of jumping exactly 24 hours ahead, only for Woo Seok and Young Eun to arrive in a future where their lab is destroyed, their colleagues have vanished, and a violent attack appears imminent. Woo Seok returns alone, shaken and racing against the clock to prevent the catastrophe he witnessed, unraveling corrupted surveillance clues, rising paranoia, and the possibility of betrayal within the team. As tensions escalate and the countdown to 11 A.M. approaches, the scientists struggle to determine whether the future is fixed or if they can still change the fate awaiting them—and save Young Eun from a doomed timeline.

Another excellent Korean movie for sci-fi lovers. I really loved the quote from Proverbs, although at first I didn't get it. But when they went to the future, I totally got it!

Korean Film: The Throne (2015) ~ A Heartwrenching Tale of King Yeongjo and Crown Prince Sado

"The Throne" is a Korean film, released in 2015, and it stars Song Kang-Ho as King Yeongjo and Yoo Ah-In as Crown Prince Sado. It is based on true historical events surrounding the father and son during the Joseon Dynasty.

  • Memorable Quote: “In the palace, parents think of their children as enemies.”

The Throne (2015)

The public is divided on what really happened between the king and his son. Most agree that their relationship was tense and often contentious. But isn't that often how it is between the older generation that wants to hold on to customs and traditions and the younger generation who dare to think differently?

Many believe that other royals, powerful nobles, and court officials who were happy with their comfortable lives schemed to be rid of the crown prince because ... what's wrong with the customs and traditions that have lasted for 400 years? How dare he challenge the status quo? If the crown prince's suggestions or reforms were implemented, they could lose “their place in line”. Commoners and slaves could get in and might get ahead of them because they are treated equally? That can NOT happen.

One fact that nobody disputes is that the Crown Prince Sado suffered a horrible, cruel, and inhumane death. And to think that it was his own father who buried him alive by nailing him into a rice chest. No matter how many times and how many ways I hear this story – via movies, TV series, documentaries, written articles, etc. - it's still hard to digest.

NO THRONE IS WORTH YOUR CHILD'S LIFE.

NO COUNTRY IS WORTH YOUR CHILD'S LIFE.

PLOT SUMMARY:

The Throne” (2015), directed by Lee Joon ik, is a devastating historical drama that examines one of Korea’s most infamous royal tragedies: the death of Crown Prince Sado, ordered by his own father, King Yeongjo. The film opens with a shocking moment—Sado attempting to assassinate his father. Though the attempt fails, it sets the tone for a story steeped in tension, fractured loyalty, and generational trauma.

The narrative unfolds through interwoven timelines, shifting between Sado’s final days trapped inside a wooden rice chest and flashbacks that reveal how the father-son relationship deteriorated. As a child, Sado is portrayed as bright, artistic, and emotionally expressive—traits that clash with the rigid expectations of King Yeongjo, a ruler obsessed with scholarly perfection and Confucian discipline. The king’s affection for his son is genuine but conditional, rooted in the belief that a prince must embody flawless academic and moral virtue. When young Sado admits he studies only “once or twice a year,” Yeongjo interprets this as rebellion rather than honesty, planting the seeds of resentment.

As Sado grows older, the pressures of royal life intensify. He becomes increasingly unstable, torn between his desire to please his father and his inability to conform to the suffocating expectations placed upon him. The film suggests that political factions within the court exploit this tension, further isolating Sado and deepening Yeongjo’s mistrust. Meanwhile, Sado’s wife, Lady Hyegyeong*, and his mother attempt to shield him from the king’s wrath, but their influence is limited within the palace’s rigid hierarchy.

  • *Later, the crown princess defied customs and traditions and wrote her memoirs.  One can only believe she wanted to set the record straight about her husband, if only so that her son knew what happened.  He was very young when his father was put to death.

The film’s emotional core lies in the tragic miscommunication between father and son. Yeongjo, shaped by his own traumatic past—including accusations of fratricide and witnessing palace murders—believes harsh discipline is the only way to protect the throne. He famously remarks that royal parents “think of their children as enemies,” revealing how deeply fear and paranoia have shaped his worldview. Sado, on the other hand, longs for empathy and freedom, turning to painting and socializing as escapes from the suffocating court life.

When Sado is accused of treason—partly due to political manipulation and partly due to his deteriorating mental state—Yeongjo faces an impossible dilemma. Executing his son would brand him the father of a traitor, destabilizing the monarchy. Sparing him could embolden political enemies. Ultimately, Yeongjo orders Sado to take his own life. When Sado’s loyalists intervene, the king commands that he be sealed inside a rice chest, where he suffers for eight agonizing days.

Inside the chest, Sado hallucinates, reliving childhood memories and confronting the emotional wounds inflicted by his father. These scenes are some of the film’s most haunting, blending psychological horror with historical tragedy. By the time Sado dies, the audience understands that both father and son are victims of the monarchy, of political machinations, and of their own inability to bridge the emotional chasm between them.

This film ultimately portrays a royal family destroyed not by treason, but by expectations, fear, and the crushing weight of tradition. It is a deeply human story wrapped in the grandeur and brutality of Joseon Era politics.

(NOTE:  This movie is very hard to watch.)

Neo-Noir Korean Drama {Review]: Decision to Leave (2022)

Neo-noir is a modern take on classic film noir, which thrived in the 1940s–1950s. South Korea began embracing neo-noir elements in cinema during the late 1990s and early 2000s, with films like Oldboy (2003) and Memories of Murder (2003) setting the tone.

Neo-noir K-dramas are highly popular among international audiences, especially fans of psychological thrillers and crime dramas. Their appeal lies in:

  • Complex antiheroes and morally gray characters

  • Stylized visuals with moody lighting and urban landscapes

  • Themes of revenge, corruption, and existential dread

Directors like Park Chan-wook (“Decision to Leave”) helped elevate the genre globally.

Decision to Leave is actually a South Korean neo-noir romantic mystery film, not a K-Drama. It was directed by Park Chan-wook, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jeong Seo-kyeong. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Based on OR Inspired by? The film is an original story, not based on any existing work.

  • Release Date: Premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 23, 2022, and was released theatrically in South Korea on June 29, 2022.

  • Genre: Mystery, Thriller, Romance, Drama.

  • Filming Locations: Primarily filmed in South Korea, including Busan.

  • Where to Watch: Available on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and Hulu.

  • Main Characters:

    • Tang Wei as Song Seo-rae

    • Park Hae-il as Detective Jang Hae-jun

    • Lee Jung-hyun as Jung-an

    • Go Kyung-pyo as Soo-wan.

Plot Summary:

Detective Jang Hae-jun, a dedicated investigator suffering from insomnia, is assigned to a case involving the mysterious death of a retired immigration officer, Ki Do-soo, found at the base of a mountain he frequently climbed. As Hae-jun delves into the case, he meets Song Seo-rae, the deceased’s enigmatic widow. Though Seo-rae’s lack of grief and suspicious injuries make her a prime suspect, Hae-jun finds himself drawn to her in ways that compromise his judgment.

As the investigation unfolds, Hae-jun becomes obsessed with Seo-rae, watching her from afar and engaging in intimate conversations that blur the lines between detective and suspect. His growing infatuation leads him to cover up evidence, despite realizing that Seo-rae may have orchestrated her husband's death. Their relationship is a delicate dance of trust, deception, and longing, culminating in a tragic separation.

A year later, Hae-jun, now struggling with depression, encounters Seo-rae again—this time married to a wealthy businessman. When her new husband is found dead, Hae-jun is once again drawn into her orbit, suspecting her involvement. As he pieces together the truth, Seo-rae makes a final, haunting decision, leaving Hae-jun devastated and forever searching for answers.

Awesome Korean Drama Based on True Love Story: Dong Yi (2010)

HA! That stands for hooked again!! My new addiction is watching Korean historical drama TV series. There are way too many of them for me to keep up. They are so exciting and interesting, even though the basic plot in most of the series is pretty much the same.

What's the basic plot, you ask?

Eh! Some palace intrigue on the inside, rivalry among the nobles and scholars on the outside, honorable slaves, and commoners who prove time again that being poor and uneducated does not equal stupid! ... and of course, the love triangle.  No Korean drama is complete without the love triangle.

For each series, the script writers take this plot, create different and intricate twists and turns, and develop characters that make the viewers immediately choose sides and start rooting for them! I like this lady or this man! But that person has got to go! When the ruthless evil characters finally go down, you're pumping your fist in the air and going Yeah! A flood of relief washes over you and then you have to remind yourself that it's just a TV show. :)

Image credit: Official poster found at viki.com

While seeking and finding more and more historical series to satisfy my K-drama addiction, found “Dong Yi” (2010). This television program is directed by Lee Byung Hoon, who also directed "Jewel in the Palace" (2003).

Reviews indicate that Hoon's 2003 series was extremely successful, so it went on my watch list. But because the 2010 series includes in its cast an admirable child actress, Kim Yoo Jung, who also starred in “Tamra the Island” (2009) and “The Moon Embracing the Sun” (2012) ~ her cute little face drew me in. The series is based on the life of a real historical person: Royal Noble Consort Suk of the Haeju Choi clan.

{Side Note – According to recent reports in South Korean entertainment news publications, Ms. Jung's latest project, “Moonlight Drawn By Clouds” aired its first episode during the 4th week of this month, August 2016. It is being well received.  Series at viki.com.}

Back on point. The child character played by little Ms. Jung, is a “commoner”, i.e. not born into a noble family, who grows up into a beautiful and intelligent, caring and compassionate young woman, played by Han Hyo Joo. The character's name is … what else? Dong Yi!

She went from the child who had everything taken away from her to the woman who had the world laid at her feet. According to all the fortune tellers, “her light” was going to shine brightly in the land of Joseon.

Nothing annoys me more than reviews with spoilers, so extra precaution is taken to constrain myself and not to reveal too much. Here are my impressions so far.

Good start! Series starts off with a very peaceful idyllic scene of a man fishing and enjoying a quiet leisure moment. The silence is immediately shattered when the man is brutally murdered. But before he breathes his last breath, guess who finds him? A young child named Dong Yi!

Good fortune? I'll say! This lady was born under the Lisa Bonet lucky star. She got two hot guys wrapped around her finger! If you know who Lisa Bonet is and you watch this show, then you'll understand my meaning. :)

60 episodes and I've only reached the halfway mark. What's the hook the writers used to keep you interested all the way to the very end? A butterfly! Don't know about everybody else, but I love butterflies!

Under the Queen's Umbrella: Korean Drama TV Series on Netfilx Released in 2022

Under the Queen's Umbrella is a Korean historical period drama series, released in 2022, that is currently streaming on Netflix.

16 intense episodes. Viewers gave this series 4.9 out of 5 stars. I totally agree.  Kim Hye-Soo's performance as Queen Im Hwa-Ryeong is award-worthy. But giving credit where credit is due, quite frankly, all of the actors and actresses in this series gave exemplary performances. They played their roles as if they were real historical figures in the Joseon Era.

The worth of the flowers in the palace, i.e. the king's women, is judged by how many sons they bare the king.

Queen Im Hwa-Ryeong (played by Kim Hye-Soo) has been very fortunate. She bore five (5) sons for the king. Her oldest son is the crown prince, but he is suffering from a life-threatening illness. He could die any day! If he were to die, who would take his place? The crown prince already has a son of his own, so according to the line of succession, his son, her grandson, should be heir to the throne. Then as alternatives, one of his brothers, her four other sons who are grand princes, could be chosen. But her sons are perfectly content to never be king. She would have been content to allow them not to pursue the throne EXCEPT … the deposed queen (i.e. the queen before her) also had many sons.  When she realized the lives of her sons were in jeopardy, she immediately made up her mind that her sons would not suffer the same fate as Queen Yoon and her sons.

Queen Im Hwa-Ryeong now understands that THIS IS WAR!
