Music: ♫ Amy Winehouse: Her Signature Song: “Back to Black”

I grew up during the 60s and the 70s. Amy Winehouse recreated that throwback vibe. It’s a pity she departed so soon.

Amy Winehouse passed away July 2011. But her music endures.
“Back to Black” is the signature song by Amy Winehouse that she left for us to remember her by.

♫ ♫ ♫ ♫

Enter Amy Winehouse. 14 September 1983

Exit Amy Winehouse. 23 July 2011

♫ ♫ ♫ ♫

Music is my weakness. So many songs have left an imprint on my life and as life passes those songs still move me. No doubt, it’s that way with everyone.

But in my generation, so many talented souls departed this life way too early than they should have — like Janis Joplin (1943–1970), Jim Morrison (James Douglas “Jim” Morrison, 1943–1971), etc.

I grew up during the 60s and the 70s and always tell my kids that the music of my generation was the best! That’s why the artists and musicians of their generation “sample” it. But every now and then there are singers from my kids' generation that hearken back to that old-school sound I remember.

Amy Winehouse recreated that throwback vibe.

It’s a pity she departed so soon.

You would think the artists in later generations might learn from the tragic stories of others and not repeat history. But they don’t learn and they do repeat the tragic history.

Yet when another bright one finally gets to shine their light, and no sooner than they are in the spotlight, their candle is blown out.

I was just starting to enjoy her raspy soulful sounds when it was announced that she was gone.

Glad she did a duet with Tony Bennett to leave as part of her legacy.

Meet Jeff Majors, Harpist and Breakthrough American Musician

The harp is mentioned more often in the Bible than any other musical instrument.

The harp is an earthly instrument with a heavenly sound. It can soothe a troubled soul.

In Jewish history, it is written that when King Saul was tormented, he asked for someone to play the harp for him to calm his spirit. A young harpist named David was recommended. The lad was surely an extraordinarily talented musician because he was often summoned to play for the king to relieve his distress. When David grew up, he succeeded Saul as the second king of ancient Israel. Music continued to be an integral part of his life, and in addition to being an accomplished harpist, he also wrote psalms (songs).

Unfortunately, none of the harp music of King David was preserved, so we can only imagine what those hauntingly beautiful and caressing melodies may have sounded like.

Fortunately, Jeff Majors is a harpist with a great imagination!

The American music audience no longer insists that the harp is just for classical music thanks to breakthrough artists like jazz/gospel harpist Jeff Majors.

Now a well-known and much-appreciated African-American artist/composer/harpist, Jeff Majors followed his dream. Literally. He actually had a dream about playing the harp and decided he would learn. He was taught by the late Alice Coltrane (1937 -2007), jazz pianist and harpist, and the spouse of the legendary John Coltrane (1926 -1967).

Along with Alice Coltrane, Mr. Majors credits the late Dorothy Ashby (1930 -1986) with influencing his musical style. These ladies proved that the classical harp instrument could be easily and effortlessly integrated into jazz compositions. Once Mr. Majors mastered the instrument, he set out to share his musical gift with others. Through collaborative efforts with other artists, he has set to music some of the Psalms written by King David.

Official website.

FUN FACT: Mr. Majors named his harp "Hanifah". (A female given name: from an Arabic word meaning “true believer”.)

Classical Music - Non-European Composers

Ever find a music blog or website that is so good it's hard to tear yourself away? Found one! Berussagroup® (berussamusicart.com) The wide range of information on various singers, musicians, composers, etc. could keep you busy all day if you have some leisure time.

This site led me to a classical composer and answered my question. I wanted to know if anybody knew any famous non-European (or Non-Western) classical music composers. I was wondering about people during the same time period as Mozart or Beethoven; however, this gentleman is a modern composer: Yuhki Kuramoto (born 1951). Most of the music he composes is for the piano. Still looking for non-European classical music composers.  But this is a start.

Can you recommend others?

Music Appreciation: The Harmony of Human Voices

“Songs are thoughts, sung out with the breath when people are moved by great forces and ordinary speech no longer suffices.” – Orpingalik, Inuit poet and Shaman

Don’t you just love this quote? Do you like music? Do you like singing? Do you especially love to listen to a chorus of human voices? Have you ever heard of a non-profit organization called Growing The Voices: Festival 500? If not, when you finish reading this article you will know just enough to stimulate your appetite so that you’ll want to find out more.
music

This organization was founded in 1997, and its International Choral Festival is a biennial event; a non-competitive celebration. They celebrate the harmony of human voices. The eighth Festival was held in July 2011. This was the year I discovered them. Sadly, because of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, there are no festivals scheduled. But let’s discuss some of their past events.

Bobby McFerrin* was a guest artist and conductor in one of these festivals. He has described his experience as “I bathed in joy.” regarding his participation in 2003.

Can you believe it?! Bobby McFerrin is (in my humble opinion) one of the most gifted and talented singers and musicians that ever walked on planet Earth. I am so sorry that I missed his live performance. It was held in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada; North America’s oldest city. I searched out this location to gather some general information. Newfoundland and Labrador is a Canadian Atlantic province. St. John’s is the primary municipality of the St. John’s Metropolitan Area and the largest city of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Not that I could have attended the festival anyway. It’s too far away from my home in Austin, Texas and I no longer travel; except virtually.

Even though I missed that performance, I am happy to have discovered this non-profit organization. They keep their official website and social media pages updated. My finding was accidental. I was scanning Facebook activity saw the words “The Choir Project”. Two of my daughters have always been active in their school choirs so I was curious to know more. This Project was based in Naples, Florida, U.S.A. and they stated that their mission was “to build community chorally.” When I perused the various posts on their page, the links led me to the Festival 500 and information about all the wonderful groups that had performed. I watched the uploaded videos and the best word to describe the various choral events is “phenomenal”. Below is a sampling of the awesome communities of choruses. Each of these organizations either has its own official website and/or social media presence if you want greater detail about them.
  • ‎Rajaton, six Finnish singers, sang Finnish “classics”, including “Butterfly”, and some new pieces. They are one of the world’s leading Acappella ensembles.
  • The Hamilton Children’s Choir also performed. This organization has a well-deserved reputation for being one of the foremost children’s choral programs. They provide vocal instruction and musical training to children between the ages of four and eighteen.
  • The Kokopelli Choirs, based in Edmonton, Canada, sang with Quintessential Vocal Ensemble, St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada and The Wits Choir, Johannesburg, South Africa.
choire

♪ The Kokopelli Choir Association is an Edmonton-based family of choirs with a goal of encouraging young singers to develop their talents and pursue their musical dreams. They combine traditional choral music with an unconventional presentation.

♪ The Quintessential Vocal Ensemble, known especially for its Acappella repertoire of many styles and periods.

♪ The Wits Choir: The exact quotation, extracted from their Facebook page states: “The Wits Choir is unlike any choir you have ever experienced: vibrant, young, and colourful!”

Based on listening to the videos posted by The Choir Project, all of these groups who performed at the Festival 500 are “unlike any choir you’ve ever experienced”. Like I said … phenomenal!

One final comment which is worth an honorable mention: One of the concerts presented by The Choir Project was called “Voices of Courage”. It was a dedication to those who lost their lives in the attacks on September 11, 2001 in the USA. This really struck a note with me.

**A Few Bio Notes About Bobby McFerrin:

Bobby McFerrin was born on March 11, 1950, in New York City, USA, and comes from a family of musicians.

He won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year and Record of the Year, and "Best Male Pop Vocal Performance" for his hit song “Don't Worry, Be Happy” (1988). But I still say the song and video “Baby” should be just as well known. #MyOpinion

McFerrin studied at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York where he developed and honed his unique vocal technique, an impressive vocal range and he can create complex melodies and harmonies using only his voice. His voice can mimic instruments. His music is categorized as jazz, classical, world music, and contemporary pop. He has gained recognition for his interpretation of classical pieces and as a jazz innovator. Additionally, McFerrin conducts workshops and masterclasses on improvisation, vocal techniques, and the power of music. His impact on the world of music is truly remarkable.

BLACKSWAN : The K-pop Girl Group That Are Not Korean (???)

Today is October 6, 2023. I just discovered this group. I put words like "foreigners' and "K-pop" in the search box and out popped BLACKSWAN.  This group consists of four (4) lovely ladies and none of them are Korean. “There is Gabi from Brazil;NVee from the United States; Sriya from India; and Senegal-bornFatou, who now lives in Belgium.” These are not people with Korean ancestry who happen to live in a country outside of Korea. These young women are NOT Korean. Yet, they sing in Korean and in English, just like all of the popular K-pop groups.

Will they succeed? Uuuummm … I can't predict.

BLACK SWAN

But I can say that when I was growing up in the USA:

  • I remember a group called “The 5th Dimension”. Do you know what was so different about them? They were BLACK but sounded WHITE! Their music was being played on white radio stations. It was such a shock when people saw them in person.

All of these artists were popular and successful. To what do they owe their success? Hey! They made good music!

I can't predict the success of Blackswan. There is an article published by CNN, and some criticize this group by “accusing them of cultural appropriation”.

Cultural appropriation? You got to be kidding me! Might as well argue the K-pop groups culturally appropriated their music and dancing styles from Westerners and that means none of the K-pop groups should succeed! Just saying.

Favorite Music Videos: Stevie Nicks, Fleetwood Mac – Landslide & Gypsy

Not much needs to be said about this American singer; one of the female song singers from my generation who left a mark on my musical psyche. Her voice is timeless. The songs that she sang were timeless. The group that she was the lead singer for, they are also timeless. Who am I talking about? I’m talking about Stevie Nicks, lead singer for Fleetwood Mac. She’s one of a kind.  Timeless!
Stevie Nicks ROCKS!

Music: Renaissance is Progressive Rock

Do you like the study of the Renaissance period? If you do, you are not the only one. I’m with you! Not only is that period in history very interesting, but the meaning of the word also gives you a license to apply it to so many other things. Renaissance means “rebirth”. From there it’s a short walk to the road of “rediscovery”. Well, my logic dictates that if you were reborn then you also have to rediscover. Agree?

OK. At this point, my logic may come across a tad bit illogical. But not much.

It’s nice to rediscover jewels from your youth. Although this group is not a rediscovery for me. They’re brand new! Although they’ve been around since 1969 (i.e. my youth), I never heard of them. However, I do like their style.  The group is called Renaissance, and they experiment between rock, folk, and classical music forms. According to Wikipedia, the appropriate genre with regard to how to classify their music style is “progressive rock”.

How would I describe their sound? Are you familiar with the Irish singer Enya? The vocals for this group have that charming soothing Celtic kind of tone in their voices just like this fabulous lady. The instrumentalists sound like classically trained musicians who could have played to entertain the kings and queens of the Middle Ages; so it’s no surprise that they were invited to perform at Carnegie Hall (Manhattan, New York USA) and Royal Albert Hall (South Kensington, London, England).

To date, they have released 89 albums. Listed below are just a few.

Music Lovers: My Top 5 Picks for Contemporary Female Violinists

A listing of my five (5) favorite female violinists, along with a few bio facts and a little bit of background information on how I discovered these fabulous musicians.

(1)
British Violinist Vanessa-Mae

Vanessa-Mae Vanakorn Nicholson is a British violinist known simply as Vanessa-Mae (?? Chén Mei). She was born October 27, 1978, to a Singaporean mother and a Thai father, but she was adopted by a British citizen and was raised in England. At the age of 4, she started playing the violin. My discovery of this talented violinist was accidental. Several years ago, I joined a music club so that I could buy world music at discount prices. I heard her play a song that was very popular during my teenage years. In fact it was one of my favorite pop songs and hearing her play it brought back a joyful memory for me. The name of the musical piece was “Classical Gas”, which was composed and originally performed by Mason Williams. When I heard her play it, I became an instant Vanessa-Mae fan. So I bought some of her albums to add to my music library. Her album sales were so phenomenal that in 2006, she was considered one of the wealthiest entertainers under 30 in the United Kingdom. Ms. Mae calls her musical style “techno-acoustic fusion.” I call it mind-blowing!

(2) American Violinist Karen Briggs

My late husband introduced me to the new age music genre and one of the best selling artists in this genre is Yanni. While listening to a televised Yanni concert that he was video taping (his hobby) so we could re-watch the program over and over, I was introduced to this fantastic female violinist: Ms. Karen Briggs.

Ms. Briggs is also known as the “Lady in Red”. She was born on August 12, 1963, in Manhattan, New York. She was blessed to come from a family of musicians. She started playing the violin at age 12 and at age 15, she decided that she wanted to play professionally. I had never heard of this virtuosa until I watched her solo performance on Yanni’s Live at the Acropolis concert. I could say she was splendid or even magnificent. But if you saw her perform you would say the compliment was insufficient. There are no words to sufficiently describe her. She toured with Yanni for thirteen years. Her latest performance was in 2019. She was invited to perform in Iraq and she was the only woman in the ensemble. Unfortunately because of COVID-19, her 2020 live performances have been canceled until further notice.

(3) Irish Violinist Máiréad Nesbitt

In America, we are fortunate to have a PBS station (Public Broadcasting Service) which airs most of the Celtic Woman concerts. I love these remarkably talented female singers. They voices are magical, even heavenly. Máiréad Nesbitt (pronounced like “parade” with an “M”) does not sing. However, this adorable violinist appears as a solo violinist at all of Celtic Woman concerts. Her parents are both music teachers and all of her siblings are musicians. She has been playing the violin since the age of six. The NY Times describes her as “A demon of a Fiddle Player.” I know they mean that as a compliment. However, I think the best word to aptly describe all of the performances that I have seen is … electrifying! She lights up the stage and literally dances all over the place while she’s playing. You can’t take your eyes off of her. Fans are encouraged to follow her Twitter feed (@MaireadNesbitt) to keep up with her activities.

(4) American Violinist Lindsey Stirling

My youngest daughter told me that it was impossible for me to say that I liked female violinists and not know about Lindsey Stirling. So I looked her up on YouTube. OK! So now I can say that I like female violinists. Ms. Stirling was born on September 21, 1986, and attended junior high and high school in Arizona. She is not only an excellent violinist, be she is a composer and a dancer.

According to her true life story, she said in an interview with NewMediaRockstars, an online magazine which shines a spotlight on successful YouTubers, “…ever since I was a kid, I’ve always wished that I could dance, but my parents said, ‘You [can] choose violin or you [can] choose dance, but we can’t afford both’”. She chose the violin, i.e. her parents paid for and supported her violin playing. However, when it came to being a dancer she didn’t give up her dream. It’s just that her parents didn’t pay for dancing lessons. Her YouTube music videos are enchanting; especially the Christmas videos. She started her YouTube channel in 2007 and she presents her very own choreographed violin performances. The YT channel is the best way to keep up with her.

(5) Lebanese Violinist Hanine El Alam

Once again my late husband gets the credit for discovering this jewel. He was searching for either Arabian music or Arabian artists (another hobby) and found Hanine El Alam. Words to describe her performances? Exotic. Exciting. Exhilarating. In a 2017 article published by Scene Noise, she is described as follows:

Hanine El Alam is a fiercely talented and diverse violinist from Lebanon. Her “performances” are hardly just that; they are dazzling, larger than life spectacles, featuring adorned dancers, magnetic collaborations and a full band blending techno, Latin and Arabic flavors — not to mention the razzle-dazzle wardrobes. Her music videos are equally as dramatic and extravagant.”

That quote says it all. I could not have said it better. For more about her, she has an official website and you can find her on YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram.

Do you have a favorite female violinist?

In Memory of: Tina Turner (1939 - 2023) | Queen of Rock'n'Roll

We've lost a legendary soul sista! TINA TURNER (1939 – 2023)

Anna Mae Bullock was born in Nutbush, TN.  She is known and loved by many as Tina Turner.  The first time I saw Tina Turner perform was on the Ed Sullivan Show, on Jan 11, 1970. She was electric!  She became famous for her cover of the Creedence Clearwater Revival classic song “Proud Mary”.  I followed her career from that time forward.

Tina Turner

I liked most of her songs but I narrowed down her 60-year career and picked these four:

River Deep – Mountain High

One of the Living (from OST for Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome)

She was chosen to sing the theme song for the James Bond film “Golden Eye”. Here's a little trivia about that. Bono wrote that song especially for her to perform.

She sold her music catalog ~ 60 years of music ~ for $50 million.

Whereas Aretha Franklin was called the “Queen of Soul”, Tina Turner was the “Queen of Rock and Roll”.

In her personal life, she did something that made me proud.
~ She's a survivor. SHE WALKED AWAY FROM HER ABUSIVE HUSBAND, IKE TURNER. She left everything behind and walked off with nothing her stage name “Tina Turner”; and with that name, she reinvented herself and become even more successful than when she was Ike.

She performed her last live concert in Austin, Texas USA. I live in this city but sadly I did not get to attend the show.

When I think of Tina Turner, I think:
STRONG WOMAN.
REMARKABLE.
A FIGHTER.
ICONIC.
EXEMPLARY and LEGENDARY.
A BEAST!! (And I mean that in a good way.) :D

Tina Turner described how she wanted to be remembered in an interview just six weeks before her death | Daily Mail Online

Goodbye my sweet soul sista! <3

Throwback: Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome

Tina Turner. Awesome throwback song from the soundtrack for the movie 'Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome' (1985).

“There's just one thing you've got to know ... You're one of the living.” ~ One of the Living

Favorite Music Video: Steve Winwood and Chaka Khan - Higher Love

I just can’t thank the British enough for invading America with their hugely talented singers and musicians. Singers like Steve Winwood.  I just love this skinny British soul brother. He did several songs I like. But I narrowed it down to two videos (below). One of them was a collaborative effort with Chaka Khan. By the way, Chaka’s real name is Yvette Marie Stevens. I’m glad that one of her friends thought the name Chaka Khan suited her better. Cause to me she looks like a Chaka Khan. That name sounds so cool.

Poor Chaka. She underwent an operation on her vocal cords and feared she may never sing again. But she recovered and she still has the pipes!

As for Steve Winwood, he is still mellow. Even though he has not released any new music for years, it doesn’t matter. His old school music is timeless.

Music Legends: The Beatles: The White Album

Are you an incurable Beatles-maniac? People who suffer from Beatlemania don’t want to be cured. Went through some of my old posts on one of my blogs and found one about The Beatles. This legendary group of singers and musicians is one that people never grow tired of. Their fandom extends across generations and their songs appeal to the youth of today just as much as they did to the youth of my day when they made television history by appearing on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964.

Did you watch (or have you seen a video of) that historic moment when The Beatles appeared on the Ed Sullivan show?

People love news about The Beatles whether it’s history or brand new news. The Rolling Stone, a magazine publication that is just as iconic as The Beatles announced some exciting news on September 24th, 2018 about the “The White Album”, The Beatles’ 1968 masterpiece. The “Super Deluxe” album is full of unheard songs and new versions of well-known songs like “Hey Jude“. According to the article writer, it’s not a revolution, it’s a revelation. Fans will be pleased!

According to Independent, a reputable UK publication, “Hey Jude” was on a Top 10 List of the most popular songs in 1968.

Favorite Music Video: Tracy Chapman – Give Me One Reason

If you’re compiling a list of American female singers with unique voices, Tracy Chapman has got to end up on your list somewhere. Not sure which number she would be on my list. Not sure if I would make a “Top 10” or a “Top 100” list. But she would definitely be on my list.

Ms. Chapman introduced herself to the music scene at the end of the 80s with 2 songs that are still popular even to this day, “Fast Car” and “Give Me One Reason”. Not only does she have great vocals but she can play the guitar and sounds good plugged or unplugged.

My current residence is in Austin, Texas, which is touted as the “Live Music Capital of the World”. Only I’ve never been to any of the live music shows. Fortunately, they air them on a television program called “Austin City Limits”. So when Ms. Chapman came here to Austin, I got to watch her performance on TV. She did not disappoint. Tracy Chapman – Austin City Limits show (2003)

My favorite music video is Tracy Chapman – Give Me One Reason (Official Music Video). It’s got a kind of a blend of a country, bluesy, folksy, soul music vibe. That’s the best way I can explain it.

Question: Is it Soul Music or Music From the Soul?

Is it Soul Music or Music From the Soul?
"Soul music is a popular music genre that originated in the African American community throughout the United States in the 1950s and early 1960s. It combines elements of African-American gospel music, rhythm and blues and jazz."  Per Wikipedia
Interesting question huh? Do you accept the Wikipedia answer?  I'll tell you what I think and you tell me what you think.

I THINK:
I think the soul creates the music.  It has to be that way. Most songwriters or musicians will probably say they composed a piece as the result of something going on inside of them – their minds, their emotions, their heart, their soul.  I think the soul music released by the late Marvin Gaye (1939-1984) was music produced from his soul.

What do you think?

Music: My 10 Favorite Guitarists in Alpha Order

My late husband played the guitar and introduced me to some of the guitarists that he likes. The Rolling Stone published an official list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of all time. My husband’s list is OK. The list by The Rolling Stone is OK. But I prefer my own picks. It’s hard for me to do a count down list. 100 is a bit much, so instead, I listed 10 of my favorite guitarists and alphabetized the names. Are you familiar with any of these guitarists?

My only regret is that I could not name any female guitarists. However, I can name My 5 Favorite Female Violinists.
