Meet Jeff Majors, Harpist and Breakthrough American Musician

The harp is mentioned more often in the Bible than any other musical instrument.

The harp is an earthly instrument with a heavenly sound. It can soothe a troubled soul.

In Jewish history, it is written that when King Saul was tormented, he asked for someone to play the harp for him to calm his spirit. A young harpist named David was recommended. The lad was surely an extraordinarily talented musician because he was often summoned to play for the king to relieve his distress. When David grew up, he succeeded Saul as the second king of ancient Israel. Music continued to be an integral part of his life, and in addition to being an accomplished harpist, he also wrote psalms (songs).

Unfortunately, none of the harp music of King David was preserved, so we can only imagine what those hauntingly beautiful and caressing melodies may have sounded like.

Fortunately, Jeff Majors is a harpist with a great imagination!

The American music audience no longer insists that the harp is just for classical music thanks to breakthrough artists like jazz/gospel harpist Jeff Majors.

Now a well-known and much-appreciated African-American artist/composer/harpist, Jeff Majors followed his dream. Literally. He actually had a dream about playing the harp and decided he would learn. He was taught by the late Alice Coltrane (1937 -2007), jazz pianist and harpist, and the spouse of the legendary John Coltrane (1926 -1967).

Along with Alice Coltrane, Mr. Majors credits the late Dorothy Ashby (1930 -1986) with influencing his musical style. These ladies proved that the classical harp instrument could be easily and effortlessly integrated into jazz compositions. Once Mr. Majors mastered the instrument, he set out to share his musical gift with others. Through collaborative efforts with other artists, he has set to music some of the Psalms written by King David.

FUN FACT: Mr. Majors named his harp "Hanifah". (A female given name: from an Arabic word meaning “true believer”.)

Music Legends: The Beatles: The White Album

Are you an incurable Beatles-maniac? People who suffer from Beatlemania don’t want to be cured. Went through some of my old posts on one of my blogs and found one about The Beatles. This legendary group of singers and musicians is one that people never grow tired of. Their fandom extends across generations and their songs appeal to the youth of today just as much as they did to the youth of my day when they made television history by appearing on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964.

Did you watch (or have you seen a video of) that historic moment when The Beatles appeared on the Ed Sullivan show?

People love news about The Beatles whether it’s history or brand new news. The Rolling Stone, a magazine publication that is just as iconic as The Beatles announced some exciting news on September 24th, 2018 about the “The White Album”, The Beatles’ 1968 masterpiece. The “Super Deluxe” album is full of unheard songs and new versions of well-known songs like “Hey Jude“. According to the article writer, it’s not a revolution, it’s a revelation. Fans will be pleased!

According to Independent, a reputable UK publication, “Hey Jude” was on a Top 10 List of the most popular songs in 1968.

Music: My 10 Favorite Guitarists in Alpha Order

My late husband played the guitar and introduced me to some of the guitarists that he likes. The Rolling Stone published an official list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of all time. My husband’s list is OK. The list by The Rolling Stone is OK. But I prefer my own picks. It’s hard for me to do a count down list. 100 is a bit much, so instead, I listed 10 of my favorite guitarists and alphabetized the names. Are you familiar with any of these guitarists?

My only regret is that I could not name any female guitarists. However, I can name My 5 Favorite Female Violinists.

Music: Ultimate Guitar Hero: Carlos Santana

Carlos Santana: Ultimate Guitar Hero

Jingle Jangle Jungle is a fabulous music entertainment blog that publishes interesting tidbits about music, artists, and the stories behind them.

Per JJJ: “ … the sound of Carlos Santana is one of the world’s best-known musical signatures. …” (Quote Source)
My additional remarks to that succinct summation of the illustrious career of this musical genius, who is the ultimate guitar hero by my assessment, are:
Carlos Santana will never die in the music industry. His music style is eternal. Long after his has departed planet earth , people will still be falling in love to the sound of the guitar played by Carlos Santana. Have heard some of his admirers say he holds his guitar like he holding a woman. Younger artists still bow to him like he’s the god of the guitar. Can’t you imagine these singers and musicians kneeling to him as they beg him to collaborate with them?

Young Accordionists Carry on the Conjunto Musical Tradition

Even though Weird Al Yankovic made the accordion a cool musical instrument, I still don't know many musicians who play. Especially, not young kids. However, it was no surprise for me to find young accordion players in Texas!

German settlers brought the accordion to Texas and northern Mexico in the mid-1800s. The Mexicans quickly adopted it and used to make their own style of music; a music genre called “conjunto”. Ramón Ayala is known as the “King of the Accordion". He inspired a generation of youngsters to carry on this musical tradition.
