In Memory of: Billie Holiday (1915 - 1959) | Jazz and Blues Lovers Will Always Love Lady Day

My late mother loved gardening. She had a way of arranging flowers in the front yard of our home, based on the season of the year. Do you remember back in the day when neighbors used to visit each other and sit outside and talk?  Well, I have a memory of one evening when my mom and some of her friends were sitting outside talking.  I don't know what season of the year it was, but when I came outside there was a wonderful scent in the air. I had to interrupt the adult conversation and ask my mom what was that delightful odor I was smelling. She told me it was the gardenias she had planted and that in the evening was the best time to smell their fragrance.

Later on in life (in my teens), I learned about a jazz singer named Billie Holiday and she loved using gardenias to adorn her hair. I must say that she looked quite stylish. I wanted to copy her style so I bought fake flower hair ornaments. Sharing an image of the late Billie Holiday.  She was a great jazz vocalist but she had a really sad life. They did a movie about her life and Diana Ross played her part.  The movie was called “Lady Sings the Blues” (1972).  Some say a lot of the bio details are not accurate.  But don't most movies about famous people change details in the name of “artistic license”?  The film was adapted from a book, her autobiography by the same name, published by Doubleday in 1956.  Anyway!  Entertainment-wise, it was a really good film.  It's listed at TCM (Turner Classic Movies).  Even if you don't watch the movie, you should listen to music.  The soundtrack is pretty awesome!

  • In Memory Of:  Eleanora Fagan Gough (1915-1959).  She chose the stage name “Billie Holiday” and was nicknamed “Lady Day” by Lester Young, a saxophonist in the Count Basie Orchestra.  The two worked together in nightclubs on New York's 52nd St.

Music Album: Black Star Elephant

I like to think that music makes the world go round and brings people together.  That's why I enjoy world music.  I especially like the African sounds. There used to TV program in the USA that aired every Saturday when I lived in Maryland. It was a mixture of Caribbean and African artists. But then they took the show off the air. Now I have to hunt for new music on YouTube and other music streaming services. Here is an article by a fellow writer named Jumper.  He saved me the trouble of having to find these two guys ~ NICO and VINZ ~ by writing an awesome introduction.

Two thumbs up!

  • NICO and VINZ two Afro-Norwegians from Oslo, Norway. The name “BLACK STAR ELEPHANT” coined from two words BLACK STAR which is an Alias for the Ghanian Football team and THE ELEPHANTS which is Alias for the Côte d’Ivoire football team. ... Read on:  Music Album: Black Star Elephant

Throwback Thursday: Duran Duran / Craig Ferguson: White Lines

Duran Duran was a super popular group in the 70s and 80s. I like almost all of their music. There was a late night talk show host named Craig Ferguson who, unlike other late night talk show hosts, was very talented and musically inclined AND he used puppets in his show. He took a Duran Duran song called “White Lines” and performed his version, with his puppets, on his TV show. It was hilarious!

Texas Music Legend, Stevie Ray Vaughan (1954 - 1990)

Texas music legend, Stevie Ray Vaughan (1954 - 1990)

There is the blues and then there is the Texas blues. Legendary guitarist, Stevie Ray Vaughan, is credited with a blues revival in the 1980s. He was described by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as "the second coming of the blues"

Sadly, his life was cut short. He died in a helicopter crash, August 1990. But his music lives on and so do his hats! He wore a plateau hats and made them look so cool people started calling them the “SRV hats. You can buy an autographed Stevie Ray Vaughan hats at auctions.

Texans love Stevie Ray Vaughan so much there is a memorial statue of him at Auditorium Shores on Lady Bird Lake, in Downtown Austin, Texas. Is he wearing a hat? Of course!

Throwback Thursday: Vanessa Williams: The Right Stuff ...

Remember Vanessa Williams? 1st African-American Miss America who had to give up her crown like the next day to the 1st runner up who also conveniently happened to be an African-American.

Ms. Williams was Miss New York and the other girl whose name nobody really remembers was Miss New Jersey. Ms. Williams had to relinquish her crown when nude photos of her were published in Penthouse. Booo! Booo!! Whatever! That contest was rigged anyway. That's my opinion and you're not going to change it with facts.

Anyway … after all the brew ha ha died down, the young lady had gotten married and her husband … at the time … was instrumental in helping her get an album released. Here is one of the most popular songs. Sharing the YouTube video because it's a great pick for throwback or Throwback Thursday. Enjoy!!

Young Accordionists Carry on the Conjunto Musical Tradition

Even though Weird Al Yankovic made the accordion a cool musical instrument, I still don't know many musicians who play. Especially, not young kids. However, it was no surprise for me to find young accordion players in Texas!

German settlers brought the accordion to Texas and northern Mexico in the mid-1800s. The Mexicans quickly adopted it and used to make their own style of music; a music genre called “conjunto”. Ramón Ayala is known as the “King of the Accordion". He inspired a generation of youngsters to carry on this musical tradition.

Music: Loreen, Sweden’s Music Jewel

Do you follow the Eurovision song contests? If so, then you should be familiar with Loreen. Her real name: Lorine Zineb Nora Talhaoui – an exotic and stunning beauty with a voice to match, which mesmerizes and captivates. This young lady is a fabulous singer. Her sound is innovative and refreshing. I discovered this amazingly gifted artist in 2014, but she was introduced to the music scene in 2004 on the first season of Sweden’s Idol talent show.

For her audition, to impress the Idol judges, she sang an acapella version of the popular song by Alicia Keys “If I Ain’t Got You”. Nailed it! The judges were very pleased. In my humble opinion, when I watched the uploaded video on YouTube, she sang as if she was already a star!

During live performances, she thrilled the audience with her rendition of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”, and charmed them when she sang “Where Do I Begin?” It was her memorable performance of an original song entitled “Euphoria” that made her winner of the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest. She was then invited to sing this same song at the 35th birthday celebration for Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden.

2012 debut album : “Heal”

Her two songs that make me happy to be included in her growing fan base are “Heal”and “Everytime”. In comparison to female artists like Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, or the late Whitney Houston, who are known for their powerful vocals –this young lady meets and exceeds the standards they set.

It has been fun for me to track back to 2004 when she burst onto the music scene by way of Sweden’s Idol contest and then follow her forward.

Music: Yuna, Malaysian Singer and Songwriter

Yuna (Yunalis Mat Zara’ai), is a singer/songwriter from Malaysia who collaborated with popular African-American entertainer Usher. Sharing a YouTube video link (below) and information pertaining to an article in TIME Magazine where you can learn more about her. Her vocals are gentle and soothing and at the same time, very impressive because they sort of linger with you long after the song is no longer being sung.

She is a Muslim and her faith impacts her overall style. Although she has just stepped onto the music scene, she is already making inroads into the fashion industry as well, working on a clothing line.
